Phyllis Marie Gregory Ross, OC, CBE; she received a BA in economics and political science from UBC in 1925, then attended Bryn Mawr College, where she received her MA in 1927. She then studied at the London School of Economics, and married Leonard H. Turner in London, England, in 1928. Their son, John Turner (1929 - 2020), became Prime Minister of Canada. When Turner died in 1932, the family moved back to Canada. In 1945, she married Frank M. Ross, Lieutenant-Governor of BC. Ross was a member of the UBC Senate from 1951 to 1954 and 1960 to 1966. In 1957, she was appointed to the UBC Board of Governors; in 1961 she was named UBC's first female chancellor (1961 - 1966).
