Kiugak Ashoona OC, RCA (also known as Kiawak ᑭᐅᒐᒃ ᐊᓲᓇ), was born at the Tariugajak camp on Baffin Island in 1933. His mother was Pitseolak Ashoona RCA (1904-1983), a well-known graphic artist, and his father, Ashoona, was one of the founders of Kinngait as an Inuit settlement. Kiugak started drawing and carving in 1947. In 1951 he met James Houston, who was collecting Inuit carvings for the Canadian Arts and Craft's Guild; the two men then worked together to expand carving in the community. Kiugak was renowned for his sculptural work, and experienced the longest career of any Dorset artist. Along with his many awards and honours, his sculpture "Sedna" was featured on a Canadian postal stamp in 1980.
