Nafasi Mpagua was born in 1933, near Mueda in Mozambique, into a family of traditional wood carvers. Around 1940, he and his older brother emigrated to Mtwara, in the coastal region of Tanzania. Later he and his brother set up a workshop near Kibaha. He is one of the artists profiled in the book "Mondern Makonde Art" (Korn & Kirknaes, 1974; pp. 54-63). In 2008 he was apparently still living near Kibaha, but was said to be in poor health.
