Born in Blackburn, Lancashire. Graduated from Manchester University in 1945 with an Honours BA in English Language and Literature. She moved to Vancouver when offered a position at the UBC Library in 1956. In 1966, she was hired as Associate Professor (Professor, 1978) in the UBC School of Information. She retired in 1991. After her marriage to Neil Brearley ended, she married George Piternick in 1971; George died in 1999. Her teaching and research interests included special libraries, authorship and access to scientific literature. Anne received many awards and distinctions for service. From 2015 to 2023 she lived at 'Tapestry' on the UBC campus.
