John Tiktak was born at Kareak camp on the west coast of Hudson Bay at a point between Arviat and Tikiraqjuaq (Whale Cove). Before moving to Arviat in the 1950s Tiktak lived a traditional Inuit hunting lifestyle. He moved to Kangiqlliniq (Rankin Inlet) in 1958 where he worked in a nickel mine until its closure. Tiktak died in Rankin Inlet.
