Joe Peters Jr. is a descendant of a long line of carvers, including his grandfather, Jack James, and his father, Joe Peters Sr. Mainly self-taught, but strongly influenced by carvers Beau Dick and Russell Smith. His great-grandparents were jailed during the potlatch ban; he attended his first potlatch with his grandmother, Lydia Whonnock.
