Judy Cranmer (nee Tweedie) was born and raised in Vancouver, and did her academic training at the Vancouver School of Art where she graduated with honours in design in 1956. She started out with freelance silkscreen printing and fabric design, later moving on to pottery and graphic design. Many of Cranmer's pottery pieces derive their form and design from Northwest Coast ceremonial feast dishes, bowls and bentwood boxes. Judy was (unofficially) the second wife of Doug Cranmer, a Kwakwaka'wakw artist.
