Painting Item Number: 3595/65 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Horizontal painting on animal hide depicting a nativity scene with four human figures. Three adults are crouched or kneeling around a baby wrapped in white cloth and laying on hay. Two adult figures on the viewer's left and right sides have yellow circles (halos) with red lines behind their heads. The baby also appears to have a halo. The adult figure in the centre of the painting does not have a halo, but there is black and red Ethiopian text above their head that extends to the right, above the halo of the figure on the viewer's right. Three small animal heads are located between the centre and right figures. There is additional black Ethiopian text below the left foot of the figure on the viewer's right side. On the back of the skin, there is a small numbered label written in ink on the lower right corner.
