Fragment: Sandal ?A7272 a-b

Two irregular fragments of natural-coloured woven plant fibres. Part (a) is larger with a tightly woven band connecting the two thicker end pieces. Part (b) is flat with a thin woven tie extending from both sides.

Pair of sandals with a thick sole made of tire rubber. Sole is covered with a piece of leather cut to size; leather is attached to rubber sole with nails. Leather straps are tied through holes in the sole.

Hide sandals (part a-b) with brown straps made of twisted sheep skin. The soles are made of cow hide with black fur on the topside. On each sandal the strap is tied on the bottom of the sole in the toe area. The strap is then looped through two holes in the sides and extends back to fit over the heel.

Pair of leather sandals. Soles are flat, rounded at toes, sides straight narrowing to square heel; three holes punched through soles, one close to top, one on either side close to heel; grey-white strap passes through hole at top and is knotted on on underside, it is looped through outside hole close to heel and then through inside hole close to heel, length left between holes to form heel support, remainder of strap is loose.

Slip-on leather sandals with an instep strap to which a braided toe divider is attached with one stud; one loop for big toe; all parts nailed to inner sole; bottom sole machine stitched to inner sole; flat heel stamped with Bata trademark and size, nailed to sole. Rows of short horizontal lines stamped around outer edges of soles.

Brown leather sandals (parts c-d) with a strap across the toes, top and back. The top has a pierced bird decoration with red and green velvet underlay. There are two buckle fastenings on the side. Slight tooling around the edges of the sole. The soles are nailed. Written in pencil on the sole of part d is the number ‘25’.

Brown, leather sandals (parts a-b) with straps that run across the instep and around the heel. There is a central, decorative, circular pattern. Very simple tooled pattern around the soles. Underneath part b, printed in pencil is "Traje to Tortuga". Both sandals have ‘7’ written in pencil on the top of the sole.
