Gambling Game SticksA1641 a-xx

Pouch (part a) made of cloth is relatively square with a very long flap, has a long blue band running along one side, and has a long metal piece engraved with 'MAY 6 1851' attached by a skin strip. Forty nine (parts b-xx) wooden sticks, all of uniform size, some of which are inlaid with abalone shells of different designs: one stick (part b) has two circular abalone shell inlays near the centre; a second stick (part c) has a triangular abalone shell inlay near the centre; a third stick (part d) has one circular abalone shell inlay near the centre; a fourth stick (part e) has a trapezoid-shaped abalone shell inlay near one end; seventeen sticks (parts f-v) are plain; and twenty-eight sticks (parts w-xx) appear to have various decorative lines.

Hollow, brown wood piece of a small female face with a complicated coiffure. The eyes are thin and crescent-shaped. Has a triangular nose and a small, compressed mouth. Four vertical marks are on each cheek. The ears are crescent-shaped. Around the sides of the head, the coiffure has five sets of thin triangular features with diagonal grooves at either back side surrounded by a larger feature with curvi-linear grooves. Along the front and the back, there is a separate band with a diamond-shaped pattern. There is a knob at the top of the head. Around the lower portion of the head, there are six rounded, horizontal bands which go all the way around. A horizontal series of holes is around the lower band.

Hollow, brown wood piece of a woman's head with an elaborate coiffure. The thin crescent-shaped eyes each have three grooved lines radiating from the outer side. Has a long, thick nose and a small, compressed mouth. The ears are crescent-shaped. Around the sides of the head, the coiffure has lattice-work features with a bow-tie-like feature at the back. Above, four major rounded features with grooved diagonal lines and a ridge along the middle are evenly spaced all around with another similar feature in between. There is a knob at the top of the head. Around the lower portion of the head, there are four rounded, horizontal bands, the lower three of which go all the way around while the upper one of which terminates at the ears. A horizontal series of holes is around the lower band.

Large, round, wooden helmet mask. Hollow, dark brown-black wood with a small, triangular, frontal face and an elaborate coiffure on top. Slit cut-out semi-oval eyes; oblong nose; small, slit, curved mouth; cross-like mark on each cheek. The ears are crescent-shaped. Around the sides of the head, the coiffure has curvi-linear grooved designs. Above, at either side of the conically-shaped upper portion of the head, there are two u-shaped projections with a taller one at the front and the back. Around the lower portion of the head, there are four rounded, horizontal bands, the lower three of which go all the way around while the upper one of which terminates at the ears. A horizontal series of holes is around the lower band.

Metal kris with a curved, damascene blade (part a). Upper portions near the hilt are carved. The hilt is dark yellow ivory carved in the form of a demon with his right arm grasping a dagger behind the head and his left hand at his side holding up a thumb and two fingers. His right leg is turned around backwards and his left leg is straight. Figure is sitting on a carved stool. The blade is fixed into the hilt by a gilded ornamental ring containing five glass stones: two red, two blue, and one clear. One side of the wood sheath (parts b-c) has natural dark blotches while the other side is plain.
