Family crests are displayed on carved wooden plaques attached to dance headdresses. These have a long trailer of ermine skins and a crown of upright sea lion whiskers. This whisker "fence" holds eagle down, symbolizing peace, that cascades out as the dancer bobs his or her head. This gives the name Feather Dances to the Tlasula.

Headdress with frontlet. Frontlet depicts eagle with killer whale above and human-like face below. Painted black around eyes and beak, blue around mouth, red on forehead, side of face, mouth, and claws. Mirrors inset for bird eyes. Frontlet is inlaid with abalone shell pieces around three edges, with an extra, smaller, row on sides. Shell pieces are tied on. Ermine pelts, some with red cloth tied to them, drape down at the sides and back. Only a few sea lion whiskers still extend at top.

Top figure is a supernatural eagle, or Kolus, in human-like form, with a crooked beak and a labret. Below that is a human wearing a three-ringed hat. His body morphs into a whale, whose mouth touches the back fins of a sea lion. The bottom bear figure is mounted on top of a short, cylindrical base.
