From card: "Greave - Made up of 12 slightly tapering hard wood slats and 8 rods woven together with twisted sinew cord. The weaving is diversified in the central portion by carrying the threads in pairs alternately over the rods. The portion not covered with weaving bears a totemic painting. When the greave is curved around the calf of the leg, the hollowed out portions, which are also beveled, accommodate the instep and knee joint. Tied at the front with thongs. The holes along the upper edge are probably for attaching the greave to the armor for the upper leg. Length, 15 inches; width of upper edge, 17 1/2 inches; width of lower edge, 16 1/2 inches. Provenience note: Anthropology catalogue ledger book lists a locality of Alaska for E67931 - 68019. Catalogue cards list a locality of Sitka. Alaska. It is unclear which is correct, though it is probable that the collection was purchased in Sitka.Listed on page 42 in "The Exhibits of the Smithsonian Institution at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, California, 1915", in section "Arts of the Northwest Coast Tribes".

FROM CARD: "BIRDS HEAD."Pipes E60200 - E60204, which do not have original numbers listed in the Anthropology catalogue ledger book, have been presumed to be from Hoonia/Hoonah by the person who typed the catalogue cards, based on the original artifact list in the accession file.

FROM CARD: "WOODEN HANDLE CARVED IN SHAPE OF ANIMAL HEAD. ONE ABALONE SHELL INLAY REMAINS IN MOUTH. COPPER PLATE INSERTED AT END OF TANG, EXTENDING OVER PART OF LOWER BLADE. BLADE OF IRON."McLean list in accession file identifies this object as Chilcat. It appears that Chilcat may be meant as a place name on this list, perhaps not specifically or exclusively as a culture name, similar to the way other objects in the collection are identified as Sitka, Kootzahoo, and Hoonyah. Chilcat/Chilkat is a name sometimes used for Klukwan.
