The Life of Meares IslandNb11.312

A main design consisting of a black thunderbird with a serpent on the wing at the right and a wolf on the wing at the left surmount a green mountain-like island. Whale below island. Thunder bird has profile head, facing side on the right. Two ears side by side are joined at downward curving tips. Short curved open beak. Wings outspread horizontally at sides have gradually diminishing feather pattern towards island. Island is outlined in black with one black line diverging into two. Profile serpent has a curvilinear body, a head facing to the side on the left, two ears side by side curving downwards, two lines of short dashes along the upper line of the open mouth, and a curled nose. Wolf has a head turning to face the side on the left, two lines of short dashes along the upper lip, bared teeth, four s curves and a four pointed star on the body, paws on the fore and hind legs curving backwards, and an inverted u shaped tail. Whale has a triangular blowhole, a small dorsal fin, an open mouth, a pectoral fin at the left of the eye ovoid has a cross and a grouping of three horizontal lines, and tail flukes having eyes within a series of three ovoids. Pencil inscription along the bottom edge reads '429/500 The Life of Meares Island J. David '85'. The print is on a horizontally rectangular, white paper piece.

A brown quilted hat with a round flat-topped crown and a turned up brim extending around the back and sides. Leading edges of the brim come to points, and extend forward. Red and blue cotton interior. Outer layer is brown brocaded cotton with silver thread medallion decoration. Silver rickrack sewn around brim's edge. Very faded from use.

Three rows of this design are in purple, one row of purple and white, and one of purple and red, followed by three rows of purple. Part b: Lid is made from 1 cm. wide fillets of palm leaf dyed two shades of purple, white, green, and red.

A piece of split palm stalk, pointed at one end, has been pushed through. Small stones placed inside. Two palm leaf strips, one green, the other red, have been plaited into a honeycomb-like strip, applied over the pointed top, and fastened below onto the split bamboo handle. Two strips of purple are bound over the top and wrapped around the handle.

Woven grass mat with a fine weave. There is a centre cone shape between two lines against a yellow, green and purple background. The conical motif suggests an architectural figure flanked by towers. There are borders on each end with green, orange and dark red bands.

Unglazed clay cart on wheels that has a covered top and is mounted on four axles. Each are encircled by clay wheels that turn but are not functional. Well-modelled form. Horse-like figure stands astride the front platform above undercarriage. Cart's four walls have openings, side ones being the largest.

Design on a mottled green ground consists of two vertical objects with tops leaning slightly to right; object on left has multi-coloured top with irregular shaped projections, five square and rectangular projections towards base; top of object on right has a curved blue horizontal intersected vertically by an irregularly shaped pointed projection, below is a semblance of a beaked figure; at base, image of an open transformation mask, two of its extensions, one beak-like and the other rounded, are imposed at different angles over the vertical object on left, small rounded extension with a possible 'eye' form at side on right, fourth extension comes towards viewer at base; bird-like image at centre of mask. Signed in lower corner on right: J. Shadbolt '83 '86. Simple silver toned metal frame, black wood strip between frame and edges of painted surface, frame extends slightly beyond edges of painting.

The figure’s lower right limb has the shape of a whale tail which is extending into the body of a whale as part of the body of the main figure.
