Note re provenience: Emmons in accession file identifies baskets E222033-0 and E222034-0 as berry baskets collected (probably purchased?) in Victoria, B.C.. Catalogue card for E222033-0 attributes to Southeast Alaska. In a letter of July 16, 1903 from Sitka, Alaska filed in accession file 41512, Emmons mentions two baskets that may be E222033-0 and E222034-0. He mentions that he is sending two very old Chilkat berry baskets to the Smithsonian.

[speculatively, possibly a version of one of the place names Karheen???] List also identifies object as "Pattern sticks or stencils for marking face for festival or ceremonial occasions ... the stick is laid on the face and the color is applied around it."Listed on page 47 in "The Exhibits of the Smithsonian Institution at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, California, 1915", in section "Arts of the Northwest Coast Tribes (Tools)".
