BoxN1.511 a-c

Circular box with a carved red lacquer exterior that has arabesque, chrysanthemums and peonies in relief, and consisting of a lid (part b), a base (part a) and a stand (part c). The top of the lid has an elaborate landscape and garden scene with human figures engaging in social activities. The edges have key patterned borders. The interior of the box and the bottom of the base are black laquer.

A long rectangular cotton cloth (khaddar) of three hand sewn long panels with the sides unfinished along the top and bottom. Blanket stitched and embroidered in three sections with silk threads. Mid-section has central circular motif surrounded by four borders of squares, zigzags, flowers, and birds. Circular motif is a lotus. Repeated on each corner, there are nine humans of varying sizes performing activities such as a couple getting married, smoking, playing games, dancing and walking. There are many scattered peacocks, parrots, and other animals. Also, a train, engine, and three coaches in the lower left corner, and pieces of shringar patti (head jewelry) in the upper left corner. Top and bottom are bordered with three rows of circles enclosed in diamonds. Two end sections are almost mirror images. Bordered with six rows of circles in diamonds and a row of eleven peacocks surmounted by two large peacocks. There is a different animal at each corner. Two humans on one end with one on the other standing atop a steed. Colours include red, orange, dark yellow, yellow, indigo, and white on a brown background.

Carved wooden Noh mask of "Hannya"; brown, with gold horns and teeth, and bronze eyes. Black painted hair, with stray strands falling over the face, prominent ears.

A light beige mask (part a) with upraised eyebrows outlined with black diagonal lines and four curvy horizontal lines carved for furrows at the brow. The slightly oval inset eyes bulge out at an angle as the high cheek bone angles to a downward bulge. The open cut out red mouth has upper teeth. The moustache and the goatee are painted with curved black lines. Hair curls over the top of the head along the edges from a set of holes. The beard is done in a similar manner. The pupils of the eyes and the nostrils are also cut out. The bag (part b) is cream coloured with a flower in a hexagon pattern. The bag has two brown ties outlined with green, one on the side and the other on the overlaying flap to tie and close the bag together.

Round, low basket (part a) of finely split bamboo with traces of green dye, especially inside lid (part b) and on bottom. Lid (part b) is ornamented with light purple glass bangles secured with finely knotted yellow cotton cord. Eleven Chinese coins are sewn on lid (part b) with light purple, yellow, green, and blue glass beads.

Black, velvet, satin lined cap. Cap is covered with blue, yellow, pink and white floral beading. A circular piece sits atop the cap with three long loops of blue-grey beads attached to it, creating a tassel-like effect.

White skin moccasins with vamps and cuffs made of black cloth trimmed with red. Cuffs have a zigzagging pattern around the bottom, comprised of three beaded lines in yellow, purple and white interlaced with straight beaded lines of blue. Vamps feature a central floral design in white, blue, purple and yellow.
