Cantonese Opera Hoop BeltN1.833 a-c

Blue three piece hoop belt (part a-c). The rectangular pieces are curved and fit together. Part (a) has one leather tab folded back under belt loops and one wooden tab. Part (b) has two leather tabs folded back. Part (c) has two leather tabs folded back. The fabric is fixed over a wooden centre. The front has gold couched floral motifs including prunus, lotus and peony motifs on a royal blue ground. The back lining is royal blue cotton.

Single skin or half drum (shagu or shade), bell shaped. Skin stretched over hole at centre top (approx. 3 cm), and the whole wooden form. Held in place by double row of hand wrought nails and iron rim. Characters, orange, green, and white, on skin. Black characters on base.

Double skin drum; wooden cylinder (hollow) with skin head stretched over top and bottom; nailed in place with hand wrought nails. Wooden portion: yellow characters (3) on green ground. Skin heads; one plain, one has six worn characters, red on yellow ground, green nails. Screw eyes inserted, one on either side in wooden portion.

Cantonese Opera HelmetN1.815

A gold painted conical helmet with openwork floral and scroll designs, and "tiles" around the whole of hat with the openwork around the upper portion, and the "tiles" around the lower portion. There are three flaps, one at the back with two at either side. Circular mirror reflectors attached to designs and flaps: seven in a flower-like pattern on the back flap, three in a triangular-like pattern on each side flap, one on each of the four quadrants of the hat itself, with another at the bottom front.

Red folded hat with embroidery and ties. The front has an appliqued lotus motif, an orange plastic rectangle and a linear border in green and brown around three sides. The back has three vertical stripes of the linear border in green and brown and tiny mirrors. The sides have pieces of different fabric. The inside lining is white cotton.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.770

The folded hat is purple and rectangular with a short pleated train. The hat has a centre panel which folds inwards once on both sides. From the top edge, down the centre panel is a blue and white band. At the bottom of the band are two blue interlocking circles on a white background. Underneath the circles is a green band with purple and pink flowers. The back of the hat has no designs. Inside of the hat there is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.811

The folded opera hat or lotus seed guard's hat is black and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a black centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are two pink peonies with green leaves and blue swirls. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds. The rounded top piece has pink and orange peonies with green leaves and swirls. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. In the centre of the flap is a large pink and blue peony. Surrounding the flower is a circle of gold scroll designs and pink peonies with green leaves and blue swirls. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two thick ecru ties are attached and tied together.

Embroidered on the centre panel are blue peonies with blue-green leaves and yellow swirls. On the inside of both side folds are blue-green peonies with yellow swirls. The rounded top piece has a large embroidered dragon motif in green, blue, white, silver and gold. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large dragon motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the dragon and in the centre of the flap is a large green symbol. Surrounding the symbol is a circle of blue peonies, yellow scroll designs and green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.
