Nose Ornament2948/41

Nose piece (Bipane) partially wrapped in a piece of sago leaf. The two shells of a clam are carved into swirls, tied together with plant fibre through a small hole in each piece and glued with beeswax. The outside shells are a light tan with dark brown striations. The underside (front) is a light grey and contains many thin scratches. The piece has a section of dried sago leaf attached to it, with the base of the leaf on the outside and the fraying fronds over the underside.

Nose Ornament2948/40

Nose piece (Bipane). The two shells of a clam are carved into crescents, tied together with fibre through a small hole in each piece and glued with beeswax. The shells are white on both sides with striations on the outside. The striations on one of the shells shows the curving lines of the bivalve and has a charcoal-grey section and some dark red residue.

Nose piece (Bipane). Two large shells of a clam are carved into thick concentric crescents, tied together with a bright yellow fibre through a small hole in each piece and glued with beeswax. The outside is a light tan in colour with brown striations. The underside (front) is ivory in colour. The two crescents are set quite far apart.

The horizontal striations on the back are dark brown and light yellow. The underside is ivory in colour. One carved shell is larger than the other. The curving tips sit close together. The beeswax join has speckles of white over it.

Marked striations on the back run horizontally on one shell, diagonally on the other. The undersides (front) are different in tone; one light grey with darker spots, the other slightly darker with white spots. The curving tips almost touch.

Dart Quiver2600/67 a-t

Two part quiver and 18 darts. Part a is a hollow reed quiver with red woven fibre sealing one end and a 4 cm band cut around the top of the other, on which to secure a rope. Part b is a longer hollow reed, sealed with tree tar at one end and corded fibre rope looped around the engraved band at the open end. Parts c-t are thin pointed tip darts made from palm wood.
