String Puppet3472/19

Small string puppet of a princess or queen character. She wears a full-length shiny pink dress with long sleeves. The front is decorated with gold embroidery tape and a gold-coloured metal pin at her waist, a white lace collar, and gold embroidery tape around the hem. She has red lips, nose and cheeks, brown eyes, and blonde chin-length hair with bangs. On top of her head is a small orange crown with blue orb within. Her hands, legs and face are carved. Her shoes and ankles are painted white with a silver tack on each toe, and legs are unpainted natural wood. The control stick is attached to the head by a long metal rod, with strings extending from the control stick to limbs. The body is jointed at the elbows, knees, shoulders, and hips – with fabric upper arms.

The panel is edged with zigzag beading with small brown cylindrical beads on off-white stitching. The coat is tied with a wide red belt. The collar and pant cuffs are lined with off-white lace. He has painted white socks and black shoes. He has red lips, pink cheeks and eye lids, blue eyes, and brown ear-length hair. On top of his head is a small blue and gold crown with red interior. His hands, legs and face are carved. The control stick is attached to the head by a long metal rod, with strings extending from the control stick to limbs. The body is jointed at the elbows, knees, shoulders, and hips – with fabric upper arms.

Raven Led The Way3631/1

Paddle carved from a single piece of light coloured wood, with a raven painted along one side of the blade and onto the throat. Paddle has a flattened ovular blade, thick cylindrical throat, and flattened shaft that flares outward at the top. Shaft has wide notches carved into it, below barrel-shaped grip; grip painted black. Painted raven is made up of formline design elements; done in dark blue, dark red, light blue, black, bronze, and green-blue. Raven's head is pointed downward, touching bottom edge of blade, wings are held close to body, and tail feathers are straightened. Bulbous face- with thick brows, a large nose, and open mouth- painted across upper half of wing. Eyes of raven and face, circle on upper half of tail, and sides of grip are covered with a crushed black mineral. Artist inscription written on back centre of blade: "Raven Led the Way" JADE HANUSE 2023 © Anuximana JH; rest of back is undecorated.

Dagger3616/2 a-b

Metal dagger (part a) with long beaded sheath (part b). Large knife with double-edged blade riveted between a two-piece wood handle. The handle is wrapped with a wire of copper alloy metal in three places - around the guard, above the guard, and directly in front of the butt. The wire is inserted into holes in the wood and held together with ornate twists. The sheath is composed of four pieces of leather - two large triangular pieces attached on the sides to form the pocket, and two smaller triangular pieces, which are attached below creating an overall hourglass shape. One side is heavily beaded with blue, pink and black diamond designs on a white background. There is one black 'x' just above the tapered midsection.

Pipe3616/3 a-b

Catlinite pipe bowl (part a) with pewter/lead inlay and a quill work pipe stem (part b). The pipe bowl is black with inlaid grey and red designs on the bowl and the end of the shank with the mortise. The design closest to the opening of bowl has a curved upper edge and straight bottom edge, with repeating alternating black and red designs within. The next design has a zigzag upper edge and straight bottom edge. Last is a solid band. The shank is square on the mortise end, tapering in to a blunt end. The bowl is conical. The pipe stem is wooden and decorated with wrapped quill work of checkerboard pattern in bands of colour (red, black, blue, green, natural quill) alternating with natural quill. The quill work is stitched together along the long edge. On one end of the pipestem is a cylindrical tenon (that inserts into the mortise) and at the opposite end is the carved mouthpiece separated by a carved circle.

Chest3630/1 a-b

Large lidded wooden chest. The exterior of the chest (part a) shows finely grooved texturing on surface. Each panel has borders at all four edges, with fine, vertical, parallel lines throughout the centre. Five parallel grooves run horizontally along the upper and lower edges of the chest, with diagonal grooves down each adjacent corner. The corners and base are secured with root-like(?) ties, wood pegs and nails. The exterior has a dark brown-black colour. The interior of the chest shows carving tool marks. There is a rectangular piece of wood along the interior, bottom edge of one side panel. The lid (part b) is flat on underside, with an upright ridge along the long front and back edges. The side edges are also carved with fine vertical parallel lines. The lid is composed of three pieces of wood pegged and nailed together. The underside surface of the lid is covered in carving tool marks.

Hat3609/4

Hat made from woven pandanus leaves with fibre stitching. The hat is conical in shape with a squared top. The interior has a plain weave construction that is stitched together with fibre. The exterior covered by layered strips of pandanus leaves overtop, arranged in a triangle shape, in alternating shades of light and dark brown with stitches along the edges of the leaves. The rim of horizontal strips of pandanus leaves is hand stitched in a blanket stitch with twisted light brown coconut fibre and black human hair thread. The inside of the hat has a circular plaited band of pandanus leaves and a synthetic fibre cord threaded with a small round wooden bead is attached.

Wooden figure consisting of an intricately carved face attached to a cylindrical rod that flares into a circular concave base; cloth ties threaded through holes drilled into either side of base. Face has a long thin nose with pronounced nostrils; raised oval-shaped eyes on either side of nose, underneath semi-circular brows. Mouth is open and oval-shaped, lips done in relief; chin extends downward in a sharp point. Large curved ears, with rectangles in front of them, protrude from either side of face; ridges carved across rectangles. Raised diagonal lines are carved across cheeks. Face is painted white; diagonal lines done in blue. The figure has tall, slanted hair carved on top and back of head, with two ridges carved through it. Hair, rod and base all done in black; ties are yellow-brown.

Adinkra Stamp3561/8 a-c

Adinkra stamp of the 'Akofena' (ceremonial sword) design, carved info a piece of calabash gourd. Parts b-c are two sticks from the handle (normally would be four). The gourd stamp (part a) has a deeply carved design of two crossed swords, with the blades curving across the top, the tips of the handles at the bottom corners. The back surface has four small holes for sticks.

Adinkra Stamp3561/6 a-b

Adinkra stamp of the 'Bi Nka Bi' (unity or peace) design, carved info a piece of calabash gourd. Part b is the handle, made of four sticks held togther by thread wrapped around the centre of the sticks. The gourd stamp (part a) has a deeply carved design of a circle with projections toward the outer edge and two inside. The back surface has four small holes where the pointed ends of the sticks are inserted, crossing midway up, at the thread, to form the handle.
