Gourd Carrier3254/15

Gourd carrier of a plaited and twisted coconut fibre. The sling consists of two plaited cords, which are knotted, creating a diamond-shaped pattern. On each side, two small lengths of plaited cord attaches the net to the handle, and each is decorated by a carved bone(?) human figure (tiki). The greyish handle is of twisted fibre, knotted on each end. (Small piece of tape with collector number adhered to handle.)

Effigy Figure3275/7 a-c

Wooden male figure in standing position, with two large, flat feet, its knees slightly bent. Head is large with a carefully carved face. Mouth is a thin line, a small nose protrudes above, eyes are almond shaped and made of bone with a small hole carved at centre. Ears have two anterior curls, and have remnants of blue paint at back. Upper arms hang at sides, with forearms and hands (parts b and c) separate pieces that attach at elbows to allow positioning at an upward angle. A loin cloth is wrapped around figure’s waist, mainly brown-grey in colour with a stripe of orange around the waistband. Cloth covers a prominent phallus.

Gambling Game Pieces3259/36 a-c

Three cylindrical bone game pieces. Part a has circular pieces of brass(?) capping each end. Engraved around the cylinder ends are circles with dots inside. Part b is hollow, and engraved with a repeating pattern of four holes in a diamond-like design, at each end, and five holes around the horizontal central groove. Part c is hollow, and engraved with a repeating pattern of circles with dots inside, arranged in a zigzag around each end; at the centre is a horizontal groove.

Soul Catcher3260/131

Soul catcher made of a tubular piece of grizzly bear shin bone, flared at each open end. The ends are split partway to look like open animal mouths. Eyes are carved above each mouth with incised designs to indicate nostrils. A human-like face and torso, with hands raised to his chin, is carved at top centre, with two small holes drilled at either side of face.

Bone amulet in animal (frog or toad?) form with wide, toothless mouth, large eyes, and forelegs positioned on either side. The back is carved with twelve faces - divided into two groups facing opposite directions of two rows of three faces. Small remnant of a hide cord at one side. Three sides are bordered with a twisted rope design.

Leister3204/16

Leister type spear made of wood, bone, sinew, steel. Handle is a long, straight, squared rod of wood with a flat butt. At top a thick wrapping of rawhide with hair connects handle to spear head. Head is made of two curving outer arms of horn, thick at top where each holds a metal spike over a central piece of bone barbed at its end.
