Mask3137/4

Mask made of carved wood and cloth. Face is round and painted pink. A small chin set into a wide rounded jaw, mouth a small carved line with slightly protruding lips, under a small nose with prominent black nostrils. Eyes are also small, carved through the wood and rectangular in shape, topped with black fabric brows. Ears are large and pointed. A head covering of synthetic black fibre is sewn to the mask’s edges and surrounds the face.

Pouch3131/15

Small beaded pouch. Bag is made of brown velvet edged in red cotton, with heavy beading in images of long leaves (oak?), other foliage, and flowers. The bag's shape is rounded with large scallops at the bottom hem. At top, two scalloped flaps fall to either side of the opening, one of which hides a small pocket. The inside of the pouch and underside of the flaps are lined in a stiff cotton. A small black strap of fabric is attached to the pouch at its top corners.

Basket3116/3

Rectangular basket with lid. Basket is short and long, woven with lines of red and black bark imbrication. The lid is attached on one long side by hide thongs, with two long thongs on the front for securing shut. Synthetic light blue fabric lines the interior of basket and lid, with a small piece of embroidered white cotton fabric reading "RWS" attached to the middle of the inside of the lid.

Violin Case3126/1

Basketry violin case. Case in the general shape of a violin, with a long neck and widening of the upper and lower bouts. Lid is attached with two small decorative metal hinges at back, and closes with a hide tie at front. Case is heavily decorated on the exterior with red and black cherry bark and grass beading, in a checkered pattern. A woven cedar bark handle is attached below the front tie closure, attached on one side by a hide loop and the other by a brown and yellow shoelace.

Noh Mask3118/1

Noh Okina (翁) mask, depicting an old man. Mask is carved from wood, with exaggerated wrinkles on brow and cheeks, down-turning eyes, a wide nose, and incised lines on upper lip indicating a mustache. The mask is painted light grey with black accents and a red mouth. The separated chin (切顎; kiriago) is attached with strands of fibre on either side of the mouth, with a long beard, possibly of horse hair, falling from chin and lower lip. Bushy circles of fibre above the eyes represent eyebrows. A long, cream coloured, braided tie is attached to either side of the mask. The inside is painted black.

Apron3098/3

Delicate white apron in an oval shape, to accompany a traditional Hungarian dance costume. Centre panels are made of fine synthetic fibre, separated across the middle with a thick band of lace in a flower pattern. Around the edge of the apron is a wide band of netting embroidered with leaves and foliage along the outside. The wasteband is a narrow strip of undecorated material that extends into long ties on both sides.

Teired white skirt; part of a traditional Hungarian dance costume. Three panels of cotton are interspersed with wide strips of lace. Below the lace of the top two panels sits a short peplum hem. The skirt if fastened at back by two metal hook and eye closures.

Blouse3098/1

Short blouse with a wide neckline edged in lace, and short puffed sleeves decorated with lace and an inset light blue ribbon. Bodice is light blue silk, pointed at bottom front and back, embelished with swirled designs in brown metalic thread along the front button closure, hems, and up the back darts. Buttons are gold orbs, and hide hook and eye closures. The blouse is lined with unbleached cotton on the inside of the bodice.

Carved and painted seal headdress. Headdress is a rounded triangular shape with a snub nose. Forehead and crown are grey. Thick black bands outlined in white form eyebrows over shallow white hollows meeting above nose. Eyes are black circles ringed by a black circle and a rounded red arrow. Nose is grey with thin red curls for nostrils. Carved red lips outlined in white over grey cheeks. Ribbed black cloth and rough cotton strips hang down back of mask. Plastic headgear attached to interior.

Black bands outlined in white form eyebrows placed over shallow white hollows. Eyes are raised black circles with white crescents outlined by rounded red arrowheads. Nose is black and brown with carved red curls for nostrils. White lines separate black and brown sections.Mouth formed by wide red lips and carved hollow painted with pointed and square white teeth over red background. . Plastic headgear attached to interior to fit wearer's head. Smooth black cloth and rough cotton strips hang down back of mask. Plastic headgear attached to interior.
