Standing figure of Hotei depicted with his usual expression of laughter. He is clothed in loose attire revealing his abdomen and carries a fan in one hand. Hotei is a legendary Chinese Zen priest known as Pu T'ai. He is said to have lived in the T'ang times as a vagabond priest with a large bag carried on the end of a stick.

The monk sits with his right leg lying on the floor bent at the knee toward his left knee that is folded up and over. He is holding prayer beads with his left hand. He is dressed in a long robe and trousers. Four characters carved are in relief across the top. The background is light brown wood. The frame is dark brown. A dark maroon-red ribbon-like string is tied through metal rings at the top.

Standing on ledge is human figure in long robes with flowing sleeves, hands folded over abdomen, holding a peach or closed lotus flower. On left of figure is a vertical inscription of nine Chinese characters; on right are five characters. Some lichen and dirt on carving.
