Coffee Pot3655/7

Coffee pot (dallah) with bulbous lower body that tapers in the middle and flares out slightly to the top. The hinged bell-shaped lid is topped with a tall finial. The curved handle is wrapped with a strip of black leather with thin sheets of metal woven in. There is a long crescent-shaped spout with a hinged metal flap that can be secured in place with a curled end. The body is engraved with two pairs of rings around the bulbous middle, and punched with repeating designs around the lid and upper portion of the pot.

Dagger3616/2 a-b

Metal dagger (part a) with long beaded sheath (part b). Large knife with double-edged blade riveted between a two-piece wood handle. The handle is wrapped with a wire of copper alloy metal in three places - around the guard, above the guard, and directly in front of the butt. The wire is inserted into holes in the wood and held together with ornate twists. The sheath is composed of four pieces of leather - two large triangular pieces attached on the sides to form the pocket, and two smaller triangular pieces, which are attached below creating an overall hourglass shape. One side is heavily beaded with blue, pink and black diamond designs on a white background. There is one black 'x' just above the tapered midsection.

Knife3509/7 a-c

Long knife (part a), whittling knife (part b) and scabbard (part c). Long knife has a deer horn hilt carved into the profile of a bird’s head. Hourglass-like designs and curvilinear motifs incised throughout. Protruding from the top of the bird’s head and the beak are sections of short black and red hair. Hole drilled through pronounced nostrils, for hanging or attachment purposes. Hilt grip covered with woven band of rattan. The blade is convex on one side, slightly concave on the other, and widens from the hilt. Tip is angled. The whittling knife has a small curved blade attached to a long, slightly curved handle. Blade end of hilt decorated with a wide band of braided metal. Blades of both knifes are secured to hilts with resin. The scabbard is composed of a wood sheath for the long knife and a bark sheath for the whittling knife. Wood sheath made of two pieces of wood bound together with rattan. Ties alternate between single dyed strands and thick decorative bands. Bands, woven with naturally coloured and dyed strands, consist of “X”-shaped designs, concentric circles and knots. Wood is painted dark red and has incised motifs, matching designs on long knife hilt, throughout. Bark sheath is undecorated and secured to wood sheath with plain rattan ties. Braided rattan carrying cord, with looped end, threaded through bark sheath.

Thumb Piano3512/47

Thumb piano consisting of eleven metal prongs attached to a wooden base with a metal bar, secured with four hooks, and supported by a strip of metal sheeting. The prongs are flat at the tip and then curve upward at their ends, with balls of resin(?) attached underneath. The top and sides of the base have raised walls; the top wall is straight, sides curve inwards. The bottom flares outward and has a rounded edge. There are incised and burnt triangle designs on the sides and bottom of the base.

Fish Spear3508/3 a-b

Model fish spear made of antler, consisting of the head and shaft (spear originally one piece, has broken in half). Head (part a) is trident-shaped, with two antler prongs on either side of the shaft tip. All are riveted together. Curved screws inserted into ends of prongs, facing inward, forming hooks. Pointed barb screwed into top of shaft tip. Long shaft (part b) fits into bottom of spear head, between ends of antler prongs. Hole drilled through bottom edge with a white cotton tie looped through, for attachment or hanging purposes.

Drum3383/14 a-b

Double-headed cylindrical metal drum with off-white rawhide skins at both ends (part a). Interlaced skin ties stretch and secure the skins. A single strip of rawhide is wound through the ties around the centre with a looped handle. Curved wooden drumstick (part b) with flat head. A short length of plant fibre is tied behind the flat head and attached in a notch partway down the shaft.

Dagger3326/47 a-b

Dagger (part a) with a leather sheath (part b). Dagger with long steel(?) blade on one end and short triangular iron blade on the opposite end. The long blade is stamped with small crescent shapes fourteen times in two columns of seven near widest end of blade. Hilt made of wood covered with leather, band of reptile skin around centre of hilt. Sheath made of leather with reptile skin at opening and knotted at pointed end. A twisted cord of leather is attached to a small loop at the top of the sheath.

Ravens and Moon3309/2 a-c

Glass spindle whorl (part a) with convex glass that is etched on both sides. The central image is the moon depicted with two ravens below in mirror image. The moon is large, with a human-like face, and the mouth echoes the central hole of the spindle whorl. There are five crescents around the moon's face, with three more within the brow. The ravens' wings extend up and around the sides of the design. The spindle (parts b-c), is composed of two cone shaped pieces of brushed steel, which screw together at the centre.

Shadow Puppet3338/9 a-c

Sun Wukong (Monkey King) shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and gold staff(?) (part c). Depicted with a human-like body, and monkey head. He wears a long yellow tunic with red tie ending in green tassels around his waist, and red pants. On his feet he wears tiger(?) shoes. His head is yellow with five black spots, except for a mask-like area around his eyes and nose. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The staff is yellow, with a thin red outline, and is operated by one rod.

Shadow Puppet3338/13 a-c

Li Tieguai shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and crutch (part c). He has long curly black hair, a curly scraggy beard and a dirty face. He wears a black robe with small red or green cloud decorations, tied at the waist with a red sash, and with red pants showing under the bottom of the robe. On his hip is a yellow gourd(?). He has bare feet. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. He has a black crutch accessory. There is a small loop at the end of the shaft for the puppet's fingers.
