Spruce root hook, carved and steamed into a "u"-shape until the two arms come together. There is a knob carved on one arm end and leader line attached. The other arm end is fixed with a wooden point set at an acute angle to the arm and lashed with braided rope.

Also attached, there is a heavy lanyard of twisted sinew (whale or sea-lion) (used to attach head to long line). Engraved with lightning serpent imagery.
