Cantonese Opera Boots2967/32 a-b

Cantonese Opera costume boots. Pair of calf-high red boots, with an embroidered floral motif and thick white soles curved upwards at the front. The foot is demarcated from the calf with red piping, from the same fabric as the surface fabric, and there are vertical lines of piping at the front and at back. The motif is of green vines with light green and white leaves and two-toned yellow and pink flowers. There are white cotton ties on the top of the boots, at the back.

Cantonese Opera Shoes2967/31 a-b

Pair of flat shoes with a striped pattern of blue and white silk, lined with white cotton. Over the toe of both shoes is a red embroidered head with gold thread couching outlined in green thread, with red ears, nose, and tongue. The tongue protrudes from an open mouth between two white fangs. The black and white eyes are round and also protrude from the face. A blue design is embroidered on the cheeks and forehead. The flat sole is made of leather, painted white on the sides. White cotton ties on heel.

Cantonese Opera Boots2967/30 a-b

Cantonese Opera costume boots. The body of each boot is made of yellow silk on the outside, with the outline of a tiger’s body embroidered on the front in black, tail to the top, shoulders at the ankles. Tiger stripes decorate the foot of the boot. On the toe is the tiger’s head, embroidered in metallic thread on a separate and attached piece of material. The ears, nose and tongue are attached pieces of red material, long pointed canine teeth are white, and the eyes protrude and are white and black. The inside of the boot is lined with unbleached cotton and two cotton strings are attached at the inner boot top for tightening. The sole of the boots are made of a thick piece of wood, painted white, angling sharply from ball of the foot up toward the tip of the toe.

Cantonese Opera Robe2967/27

Man’s opera costume robe. Robe is long with full sleeves, and short sleeve extensions in light tan at each cuff. The left front of the robe extends over the right and ties under the arm on the right seam. The yellow body of the robe is covered in triangular and pointed forms made of gold and silver sequins. The neck, each cuff and the bottom and side edging are elaborately decorated in brown and silver sequins in patterns of flowers and leaves. The interior of the robe is a light tan cotton.

Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/20

Light coral coloured crepe semi-circular panel skirt. Skirt is lined with white synthetic fabric made up of one narrow rounded rectangular panel and one wide semi-circular panel consisting of three layers of fabric, also lined. The narrow panel and all three layers of the larger panel have light and dark pink sequins sewn close to the outside edges, which are trimmed with white fur. The middle and top layers of the larger panel are smaller and more rounded than the bottom layer, with light pink, dark pink and red sequin flowers over its surface. There are light pink tassels hanging from the rounded bottom edge of the top layer of the panel. The panels are sewn together at one side and both have a narrow white cotton waistband with ties at each end. On the lining of the large panel, below the waistband, there is a square stamp in blue ink with Chinese characters.

Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/13 a-b

Two-paneled mauve silk damask skirt. Each panel has a vertical of light blue silk finely embroidered with birds, flowers and foliage, and a wide section of tightly pleated vertical tucks. The edges of the panels have a black applique floral motif, attached with adhesive. Blue silk can be seen at the interior edges and hem. The panels are attached to each other at the cotton waistband with fabric button and loop closures on front and back, and they have cotton ties for fastening around the waist.

Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/12

Long dark maroon two-paneled skirt. Skirt has a blue cotton waistband approximately 19 inches wide, attached to which are two fine silk panels that make up the body of the skirt. Panels have a small scalloped applique sewn around their edges. Each panel has a centre portion that is heavily pleated, with stitched vertical tucks. Two long cotton ties are attached at the top corners of the waistband for fastening.

Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/11 a-b

Two dark brown (almost black) skirt panels made of silk and cotton. The panels are long and attach to each other in the centre with fabric button and loop closures on front and back. Each panel has a section that is heavily pleated with stitched vertical tucks. Four thin scalloped pieces of trim run horizontally down the skirt at intervals, and along the bottom. The cotton waist band holds a long cotton tie on each side to secure the garment around the waist.

Cantonese Opera Tunic2967/10

Short silk copper-coloured tunic with black applique leaf and vine pattern down front opening, around bottom and along side slits. Around collar is an applique key pattern, also in black. At each wrist is a panel of light blue silk colourfully embroidered with birds, flowers, butterflies, trees and foliage. The tunic closes at front centre with two fabric buttons and a long tie.

Blouse2878/56

Short sleeve, backless embroidered blouse with long front panel. Strings attached at the neck and the midriff tie up at the back of the blouse. The pattern on the main fabric of the blouse is horizontal stripes in a colour pattern of brown, black, green, and yellow. On both shoulders and over each breast there is an embroidered flower motif with two circles of appliqué mirrors, one around the outside edge and a smaller circle on the inside. Down the centre and along the sleeves of the blouse is an intricately embroidered ‘tab’ which also contains an appliqué mirror border and a single line of appliqué mirrors in the centre of the ‘tab’. There are also three fully represented and two half represented ‘chicken’ pattern designs. Around the bottom edges of the blouse and on the cuffs of the sleeves there is a yellow material with red dots. On either side of the blouse there is the same material but in red with a green border. The tie at the top of the blouse is black.
