Burden BasketD1.440

Rectangular slightly flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Parallel splint base construction. Upper half of basker is fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?), with design on upper half of basket of zig-zag pattern outlined in dark cherry bark, then cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark center. Alternaing intervals of red and dark cherry bark along rim. Lower half is imbricated with zig-zag pattern with flat bottoms and tops, in cat-tail grass (?). Two rows of dark cherry bark imbrication on bottom. Two rawhide loops and long knotted handle on one long side, one loop at center and long knotted handle on other long side, one long thong on each short side.

Part (a) Elongated oval coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with pointed ends and attached lid, part (b). Fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) with rows of geometric diagonal stepped design alternating in dark and red cherry bark. Same configuration is repeated on flanged lid except at center, which has two beaded rows of cat-tail grass (?). Rawhide ties, handles and hinges. Basket looks Interior Salish, similar to D1.364 and D1.290.

Round coil basket (with bifurcated stitches), with lid. Rawhide handles tied into basket at both sides. Imbricated design in two rows of alternating checkerboard diamonds, in dark cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?), and red cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?). Short two row foot has beading, light colour cat-tail grass (?) on top and dark cherry bark on bottom. Part (b) lid has same cherckerboard diamond design but has two of same colour diamonds then alternates to other colour pattern. Knob at top is fully imbricated in red cherry bark. Hole in lid and shoulder of basket indicate they may have been tied together at one time.

Large rounded coil basket (bifurcated stitches) on pedastal with wide foot, and lid with flange and knob handle. Rawhide through one side and knotted. Fully imbricated with horizontal rows alternating in cat-tail grass (?), cherry bark, cat-tail grass (?), and dark cherry bark, repeated. Horizontal bands divided by vertical bands in two patterns, one is of straight vertical bands of same alternating colour configuration, other has dark cherry bark outline and a checkerboard pattern of cat-tail grass (?), red and dark cherry bark. Entire pattern on basket is repeated on foot, and on lid. Knob on lid has only horizontal bands.

Large, flared coiled rectangular basket (bifurcated stitches). Upper portion of basket is fully beaded in alternating rows of cat-tail grass (?) and dark cherry bark. Solid row of imbrication at rim in cat-tail grass (?) and intervals of alternating dark and red cherry bark stitches. On one long side is bow tie design outlined in dark cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?). On other three sides is partial bow tie design, two ends have outline in cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark. On other long side is partial bow tie outlined in cat-tail grass (?) and dark cherry bark, with "cluster of flies" in cat-tail grass (?) and cherry bark. Two rows of cherry bark beading on bottom. Rawhide loops on both long sides, one long knotted strap at one corner.

Coiled basket with bifurcated stitches; parallel to watch-spring base construction; partially imbricated. The design from the bottom to top: three rows of double zigzags in red on bullrush ground; stepped pattern in bullrush; horizontal line with discrete shapes; one stepped pattern; discrete shapes on bullrush ground; concentric squares and double diamonds connected by horizontal line. Four rawhide ties; one twine tie and one braided fibre rope on the front. Colour: tan.

Moccasins1193/2 a-b

The moccasins (part a-b) are brown and white with multicoloured beadwork on the tongue and around the heel. The sole and sides are made from the brown skin. The white skin is sewn on top of the brown over the heel area and reaching halfway down each side. The tongue is also made of white skin. There are thin pink and green piping separating the white tongue from the brown toe. The upper edge of the tongue is lined with purple beads. The beadwork on the tongue shows three spiral blue flowers outlined in red with two green leaves and a purple stem. The beadwork on the heel is also a floral pattern with red and blue spiral flowers, green leaves and purple branches.
