Basket1262/271 a-c

Rectangular shaped basket (part a) with raised braided rim on bottom perimeter, lid (part b) with raised braided rim on top perimeter, and circular-shaped linked handle (part c) found in basket. Lid has two small looped handles on each side and near the bottom of the basket are two small looped handles on each side.

Mirror2569/12 a-c

Mirror with case. Mirror (part a) has flat surface on one side, a scene on the other, and a handle wrapped with rattan. Scene shows a landscape with cranes, plum and pine trees, bamboo, water, rocks, and turtles. There are a few Chinese characters written to one side. The mirror case is in two pieces, with the larger piece (part c) fitting over the smaller piece (part b). The case is black lacquer with a sparkly orange lacquer interior.

Hat2516/20

Broad rimmed conical hat composed mainly of round rattan strips sewn onto palm leaf. The top section of about 5 cm is covered in coils of string and includes a thin tassle at the point, which is 6.7 cm long. Below this is a 5 cm band of red rattan (sewn on) bordered by green triangles, then a 10.5 cm band of natural leaf and rattan, then a 5 cm band of red and green like above is repeated. The rim itself is covered with a sewn on (over-cast) design of thin string. There are eight bands of design radiating from the top point down to the brim in alternating colours.

Tightly woven, split-rattan basket. Two woven handles attached to top with a length of un-split rattan(?) which has been threaded through the entire circle of loops at the rim of the basket. Handles are attached at base with another length of un-split rattan(?) and string. Design is in natural and dark brown patterns. From top: natural circles in dark background with dark centres; geometric diamond-shaped design (abstract bird ?) in natural on dark ground; four-petal flower shapes in natural on dark ground; and dark wave(?) pattern on natural ground. Dark bands at top and bottom of design.

Basket2516/7

Tightly woven, split-rattan basket with vertically alternating rows of black and plain rattan near the rim. Underneath, a snake-like motif in black is outlined by horizontal rows of black above and below. In middle of basket, an inter-connected cane-like motif is depicted in black. The snake-like motif appears again below this. At the bottom of the basket are a series of alternating horizontal rows of black and plain rattan. At the rim is a green synthetic cord which is connected through a pattern of white synthetic fibre coils. The cord runs twice around the rim and then down the outer wall to go through a hole in the centre of the base where the two ends are knotted together.

Woven shield with a wider end that tapers to a narrower end; at each end, the sides curve inwards and come to a point; plant fibre border around edge (missing on half of the shield). Front of shield is composed of two layers of cane that are lashed together with rattan with a geometric design at both ends in dark grey. Back of shield has bundle of leaves? that have been folded under the handle and lengthwise.

Roughly rectangular wooden shield with points at both ends and a raised ridge down the centre. Bands of bamboo (?) laid horizontally across the shield at the top and bottom, held in place with zigzagging stitched of dark brown rattan (?); bands continue on reverse. Edges of shield are painted black; centre is painted red-brown. wooden handle on reverse.

Cylindrical bamboo container, or lidded box. The lid is tied to the base with string secured by woven bands, one on the container and one on the lid. Handle is secured by woven rattan bands. Handle has a plain two prong-like base. Upper portion of the handle tapers and has a groove around it, creating a long mouth-like shape. There is a small hole through the mid-upper end, creating an eye-like feature.

Three bamboo bars attached together with bamboo crossbars that have been affixed with wound rattan. Between the bars, two large pieces of hollow bamboo are attached from a top piece of hollow bamboo, and the hanging pieces of bamboo have been cut in half from their midway point to the bottom of each piece. Each hanging piece is attached with a crossbar running through a semi-circular hole in the bamboo.
