Woven lid attached to a rectangular, basketry base by a handle. Dark and light brown geometric woven design on the outside consists of a pattern of light brown x-shapes on a dark brown background. Lighter colour on the inside. Lid fits snugly over the base. Handle and both rims are made with the same dark brown rattan rectangular shape with rounded corners.

Short, squat, cylindrical basket (part a) with lid (part b) of approximately the same size and shape. Natural colour. Thin, flat, roughly circular discs have been woven into the center of the base and into the top of the lid. The strands which pierce the outer edge of the wooden inserts every few centimeters as they radiate outwards, joining the wooden pieces with the surrounding basket.

Roughly cylindrical woven trap. Trap slopes in gently at the shoulder each vertical strip terminating in a knob of thick dimensions at the upper lip. A coconut shell half is fitted into the upper end and is secured with two narrow strips of bamboo (?). Three ends of these strips are incorporated (at equidistance) into the main body. The loose fourth end is single-knotted to the other strip above the shell. Inside the trap is a conically shaped structure incorporated into the trap's main body and terminating two-thirds of the way up the trap's length in vertical, pointed bamboo (?) slats. A similarly shaped, but shorter and less funnel-like structure is located within the trap's lower edge. A single strip of bamboo (?) is incorporated into the trap and wound around itself, thus forming a handle.

Tall, square-bottomed, jar-like basket. Rigid structure, square at the bottom with tall rectangular shaped body. Shoulders slope inwards to cylindrical neck which extends upwards approximately. 8 cm. Body is composed of vertical slats placed in parallel order around the structure. Slats measure 1.5 cm. in width and are placed approximately. 0.3 cm. apart. Slats are twined together at base, center and shoulders of body. They taper at shoulders and continue to lip of neck. Lip is finished with a herring bone stitch called 'iyugu'. Base is supported with rattan foot ring.

Wide, round, square-based basket with bamboo rim and foot. The rim is attached with lashed and knotted fibre; foot is pierced at intervals with fibre lashings. Exterior has linear geometric patterns in black-brown and natural; bottom has a pattern of alternating black-brown and natural concentric squares.

Exterior has a geometric design of three equally spaced vertical bands that consist of a dark brown diamond pattern. Interior has a rattan headband. Chinstrap is orange and white cotton with a tassel at the end.

Elongated, light-coloured, cone-shaped palm hat with a conical, dark wood knob on top. Exterior has three plaited geometric parallel designs that consist of a dark brown diamond pattern, one at either side and one along the middle of the shorter end. Interior has a herring bone pattern. Rim and headband are twined and strengthened with rattan. Headband and chinstrap inside. Chinstrap is twined orange and white cotton with a tassel at the end.

A rectangular-shaped basket with a square base and a round mouth. Mouth is finished with a herring bone stitch called 'iyugu'. Thin parallel strips of natural coloured fibre are loosely woven and run vertically up to the shoulders then taper inward towards the mouth. A sturdy strip of fibre encircles the square base. Several rows of weaving encircle the neck and five separate rows of twining encircle the trunk of the basket.

Eel TrapC753

Trap with latticework walls composed of strips of wood lashed together with twined plant fibre. The entrance to the trap is a cylindrical hole that connects to a plant fibre net leading to the interior of the trap. The roof comes to a point at the centre and slants downwards from the trap opening end to the opposite end. Two wooden bars are attached vertically to both sides of the trap. Two small doors on the bottom of the trap at the end with the opening, and one door held on with two tapered sticks at the opposite end.
