Braided leather band knotted around head, with a feather tucked in the back. She is wearing a layered floral dress with black pants underneath. Edges of layers and bottoms of pants are decorated with multi-coloured beads. Beads stitched on in a zigzag pattern. Dress is belted at waist with a long leather tie. She is holding a large pestle in both hands, inserted into a cylindrical, bark covered mortar. Artist name written on base.
Small giraffe figure made of wires and bottle caps. Figure has an internal structure, consisting of bent metal rods, and has strips of bottle caps woven throughout exterior, forming body. Bottle caps are orange, with black and white text throughout. Caps are attached to frame with white wires. Giraffe has an oval-shaped body and flat angled legs. Long, looped tail extends outward at an angle. Neck is straight, supporting an oval-shaped head with protruding ears and hairy horns. Swirls, done in bronze-coloured wire, on either side of face, imitating eyes. Nose made of plain grey wire; ears, horns and tail are wrapped in white wire.
Wooden four-legged animal figure in a standing position. Animal is carved from multiple pieces of wood; all components are painted red. Head and body are one piece. Legs, tail and ears are separate. Legs and tail nailed to body. Ears are inset and secured with glue. Nostrils and mouth are incised, eyes are painted on. All incisions are painted black. Ends of legs are painted black, imitating hooves. Eyes and inner ears are naturally coloured. Incised lines decorate inner ears. Black “V”-shaped designs painted along back of neck, imitating a mane(?). Body and legs are decorated with black three-leaf clovers. Dashes painted across figure, throughout clover motifs, and lines are painted along length of tail. Plastic bumpers attached to bottoms of legs. Manufacturer's mark on base.
Head of a female Bunraku theatre puppet (part a) with stand (part b). She has a white oval-shaped face, long white neck and elaborate black coiffure. She has a wide nose, large light grey eyes and her eyebrows are light blue. Her lips are painted dark red, teeth are black. Her hair is pulled back into three buns. Front bun is secured with cord, and the centre bun is held in place with a kushi (comb) and kogai (hair tool). Both are made of black lacquered wood with iridescent plastic decorations embedded in them. Designs are floral and coloured red, light purple, white, light pink and light blue. The bottom bun is secured with a two-pronged, gold-coloured metal hair pin. The top has a circular medallion with a floral motif. The head is attached to a wooden rod with a handgrip. Two cords, with toggles, run through the grip, and into the head, to control neck and eye movement. The grip fits into a wooden stand (part b), supporting the head at an angle.
Small sea turtle figure made from reclaimed plastic fishing nets ("ghost nets"), plastic twine and rope. Turtle has a white, circular head with large, round black eyes on either side. Fins are white and blue, belly made of thick grey-green rope. Curved shell is white with black, turquoise, green and pink strands woven throughout.
Canvas drawstring bag with repeating silkscreen-printed thunderbird motif. The thunderbird bodies are forward facing, with heads in profile. They are made of black designs with red highlights throughout. Black band border along bottom edge with alternating triangle motif. Bottom triangles are black. Top row has black triangular outlines; the rest of the space is naturally coloured. Black drawstring ties are on the front and back centre of bag, along the top edge. Holes for ties outlined with brass-coloured metal. Seam along back centre. Interior lined with clear plastic. Paper label with design and artist information affixed to base.
Hollow brass gong with open base. Top has raised circular knob in centre, with surrounding area slightly sunken. Small circular impressions across entire surface. Sides of gong slope inwards. Two holes drilled along top side with nylon(?) cord strung through them. Knot tied towards top of cord, for hanging purposes. Ends of cord, inside of gong, have green plastic attachments.
Weighing scale, or beam balance, consisting of a plate and balance rod (part a), with separate weight (part b). Rod is made of dark wood with brass plating around the tips. There are dot motifs along the front side, with the numbers 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 at intervals along the length, between the dots. Dots continue along the top of the rod. Dots are made of metal(?) and are impressed into the wood. Three holes are drilled through the rod, towards the left side, with knotted plant fibre and plastic ties inserted through them, for hanging purposes. Along the bottom of the left tip of the rod, there is a floral-shaped pendulum. Attached are two chains made out of S-hooks. One has a large semi-circular hook at the end, the other has four dark green-grey cords attached. Cords are drilled into the sides of the weighing plate. Plate is made of thin brass metal, with two ring designs incised in the middle. In the centre of the circle is a simple floral motif. Numbers are stamped into the plate's surface. The accompanying weight is bell-shaped with a semi-circular handle. Plain string tied through handle. There is a raised circular band around the handle, and two lines are incised along the top edge of the weight. Numbers are stamped on the weight’s base, matching the numbers on the plate.
Pyramid-like basket, with a thin oval-shaped opening and rectangular base (part a). Has a separate lid (part b). Basket is naturally coloured and woven in alternating sections of horizontal and vertical chevrons. Has a short foot, made of rattan(?) strips nailed together. Additional strand tied to frame with dark brown plant fibre. Along the bottom edge, on the back of the basket, there is a plain rod, securing long, braided straps. The straps extends overtop of the basket and are tied together, near their ends, with dark brown plant fibre. Basket front has a braid, of naturally coloured plant fibre, interwoven through it, forming a long upside down “U” shape. Towards the top of the “U,” the braid protrudes outward, creating an opening at the top and two loops on either side. The straps thread through the top of the “U” and a small reed (part c) fits through the loop sides, securing the straps in place. Lid is naturally coloured and woven in horizontal chevrons. Has a raised rim, made of rattan(?) strips nailed together. Additional strand tied to frame with dark brown plant fibre. Clear plastic string tied to front centre of lid. Basket straps thread through plastic string, securing lid to basket.
Pyramid-like basket, with circular opening and rectangular base. Has a short foot rim, made of rattan(?) strips. Basket opening shaped with three exterior coils of rattan(?). The top one is wrapped in dyed dark brown plant fibre, the middle is a wide, naturally coloured strip, and the bottom one is a thin dark brown strip. Coils are all tied together with dark brown plant fibre and plastic. Basket is naturally coloured and woven in alternating sections of horizontal and vertical chevrons. Two rods are intertwined through the basket, to secure braided shoulder straps. Rods form an “M” shape on the front and an upside down “U” on the back. Some sections of the “M” and “U” are only visible from the interior of the basket. The outer lines of the “M”, visible from the exterior, are wrapped in dark brown plant fibre. Above them, overtop where the rods are visible from the interior, are two zigzag designs, done in dark brown. Straps are attached to the front bottom edge of the basket and form an “X” shape. The straps extend overtop of the basket, loop through the rods on the basket back, and then circle around the base of the basket.
