Penis Sheath2948/119 a-b

Penis sheath made of a straight bottle gourd. ‘Part a’ has pin-prick dots burned to form vertical and horizontal ‘lines’ on the bottom half. A band of bees wax encircles the sheath above this patterning over the top of a clean break, connecting it to the section above which is lighter in colour and without pattern. The top section (part b) has broken off, around which is a woven band of ruddy-brown rattan fibre placed near the opening. Yellow nylon fishing line is attached to the band.

Penis Sheath2948/113

Penis sheath. A curving bottle gourd with a woven rattan band around the open end. A synthetic line is tied to the rattan band at one end, and appears to have been originally attached to the sheath’s tip. The gourd is cracked at the open end with one edge overlapping the other. This appears to be part of the design to allow gourd to fit inside woven band. There are scorch marks at the tip and on one side.

The right side ends in a tightly braided loop, while the left connects to long woven braids of sago leaf. There are two loose ties where this long braid is woven into the patterned section.

Belt2948/106

The main body of the belt is 11 cm high with twelve columns consisting of six horizontal painted stripes alternating between dark brown terracotta ochre and yellow-brown and white pigment(faded). This is surrounded by a border of ruddy-brown plaits with a broad loop on the left end and a tightly wound loop on the right that holds several braided ties, which may have been previously wound together, as one is thicker and made up of several braids and the others are single strands and somewhat frayed. Above the columns, two cords of ruddy-brown grass and two of dark brown and yellow-brown stripes, criss-cross to form five diamond shapes with incomplete ends. On top of these are paired lines of light grey seeds, one section is missing. Three narrow braided tassels with loose ends are attached to the bottom of the belt.
