Woven string bag (bilum). Bilum is wide and curved at the base, narrowing toward mouth, where a thin handle is attached at each side.The bag is dyed in horizontal strips of pink and brown interspersed with undyed areas. On front at centre is a zigzag pattern of pink and undyed areas edged with brown. Back has a checkered pattern in pink.

Yam Mask3134/1

Ceremonial yam mask. Object is made of tightly woven plant fibre covered in thick paint. A wide lower rim takes an oblong shape, topped by a tall circular body in the shape of an eye with brown pupil surrounded by rings of rust-orange, white and dark yellow. The eye is edged by a thin, stiff spine. Interior of object is unpainted.

Mask3137/7 a-c

Mask made of carved wood, animal skin and cloth. The face is painted orange, and displays an open mouth, small nose with a curved bridge and flared nostrils, small eye holes bored through the wood and lined with fibres, wide fibre-covered brows, and large ears to the sides. A small tuft of hair is glued to the upper lip for a mustache and paper has been inserted into the mouth to create teeth behind the lower lip. The head is covered with a thick cotton fabric lined with burlap that covers the wearer’s head and neck. Large course stiches are incorporated, as well as a rope made of plant fibre and a piece of red and white cotton fabric. Parts b and c are pieces of hardened skin with long, light brown hair attached.

Mask3137/5

Mask made of carved wood, animal skin, cloth and feathers. The face is painted orange, and displays an open mouth, small rectangular nose, small eye holes bored through the wood, and small ears to the sides. Tufts of hair are glued to the upper lip for a mustache. Three lines are drawn to the outside of each eye, and a half circle with two groups of three lines sits between the eyebrows, which are small pieces of hide. Small carved wooden teeth, unpainted, are attached inside the mouth, and white paper is set inside the eyes with holes torn in the centre to allow the wearer to see. Short-haired goat hide is attached around the edges of the mask with crown of head left bald, and to it at the back is sewn light brown cotton fabric that covers the head of the wearer. Atop the mask is a group of tall brown feathers.

Necklace3123/46

Necklace of thick glass beads strung on a cord of plant fibre. Beads are roughly cut with a dull sheen. Top portion of necklace is filled with tubular beads in a light grey-brown with stripes of blue and red-brown. Bottom front of necklace is made of slightly larger beads, also tubular with an uneven surface, in colours of blue, primarily, with stripes of yellow and green, as well as some orange beads and yellow beads also with stripes.

Small turtle shell mask. Shell is tan in colour with an organic linear pattern in dark brown, and is rounded with a slight ridge down the centre that serves as a nose. Small holes are bored through for eyes and a mouth. Dense feathers, and down, in shades of tan, light brown and dark brown surround the face, attached to the shell by rolled plant fibre thread on the interior of the mask.

Undecorated sperm whale tooth attached to a woven cord, called a tabua. The cord is made of braided plant fibre wrapped with colourful strands of yarn. Two holes are bored through the tooth, one at the tip and one near the top, through which the cord is tied.

Bent bark, square basket with rounded mouth. Rim was lined with fabric, then overcast with root. The outside is decorated with a pattern of alternating golden brown or brown squares between two bands of triangles. (Parts of the rim have thin fibres or plastic string inside.)
