Payback Doll3270/2 a-c

Carved male figure. Doll (part a) stands on large feet, legs spread, arms slightly akimbo and held away from the body. Legs are painted white, torso black, and face red. A black fuzzy beard surrounds the chin, mouth is open with small inset shell for teeth, eyes are made of the same shell, as is a headband tied around the forehead. A necklace of tubular sections of grass hangs down the chest, and arms have woven plant fibre sleeves. A bag of netting and plant fibre is slung over the left shoulder and adhered to the wood at the handle. A loin cloth of netting with long pieces of grass at back sits around the waist. Part b is a peice of netting similar to that of the loin cloth. Part c is a small feather grouping that attaches by a hole in the doll's head.

Carved female figure. Doll (part a) stands on large feet, legs spread, arms slightly akimbo, large breasts carved at chest. Head is covered in a woven fabric to represent a hat or hair, above protruding ears, shell eyes, and a large open mouth with inset shell teeth. A thick necklace of small white and brown shells is wound several times around the neck. A skirt of grass or bark is attached around the figure’s waist. Painted white. Part b is a ring of short grass, light yellow-brown, woven into a bracelet.

Large expandable fish net consisting of fine knotted fibre, which gives it a diamond-shaped pattern. The net is gathered on one end giving it a cone-shape.

Small rattle made of woven grass. The weaving starts from a square-shaped closed end, a long rectangular body, and then long strands of unwoven grass over a piece of wood(?) are bound by undyed plant fibre forming a handle. Inside the body appear to be small, smooth red stones?

Ear Ornament3254/13

Large ear ornament (hakakai or ha'akai) made from whale tooth. The ornament consists of a large disk worn in front of the ear and a curved spur. The spur has a single hole through it, with two cords of twisted natural fibre inserted through it, and is adorned with a small human (tiki) figure.

Headdress Ornament3254/4

Headdress ornament (tua or kihi) of long narrow white feathers. At the core, feathers are tightly bound by fibre. Many more feathers are layered over top, held in place by tightly wrapped plant fibre, which is again bound by plaited coconut fibre, creating a handle.

Shawl3248/1

Light brown shawl woven from twisted plant fibre, with dark brown and red-brown dyed fibre incorporated into the weave and used to create patterning. Patterns are in horizontal lines running the length of the shawl and include ladders and diamonds, among other motifs. Long dense fringe is looped at one end, and cut at the other.
