Child's Hat3203/5

Baby’s hat or cap. Construction is of four triangular caribou or moose skin pieces, wide at bottom, each coming to a point at top, and sewn together with cotton thread. The front piece is lined with muskrat fur on the exterior. Three flaps with fur on one side are tied up by thongs across the forehead, and can be loosed to fall around the wearer’s ears and neck. Unlined.

« The Speck collection contains nine tobacco pouches. Two of these are of the roll-up variety, consisting of two rectangular pieces of skin, one much longer than the other, sewn together on three sides. The larger piece serves as a flap when the pouch is rolled. » Vanstone, James W. "The Speck Collection of Montagnais Material Culture from the Lower St. Lawrence Drainage, Quebec." Fieldiana. Anthropology. New Series, No. 5 (October 29, 1982), p.12. « The other roll-up pouch is from Kiskisink and is made of muskrat skin. It is in extremely poor condition, ties with a strip of cotton cloth, and lacks a fastener. » Ibis.

Moccasins3194/5 a-b

Beaded moccasins. Shoes are made of moose skin with thick fur lining the ankle. Top of toe and flap covering the back of the heel are decorated with heavy beading: a rose with green and blue foliage on the toe is edged by a line of alternating pink and blue beads over green felt. The heel flap holds cross hatched beading in white, red, blue, and pink. Interior of the moccasins are unlined.
