THE KWAKIUTL OF VANCOUVER ISLAND. BOAS, FRANZ MEMOIRS, 8, 1909

Shirt made of white cotton with neck and cuffs embroidered in red, white and black geometric designs. Two metal snap closures at neck, and a single white button on each sleeve cuff.

Wedding sari in off-white crepe with embroidered designs in gold thread and gold sequins. Edged along three sides with an ornate band composed of three rows of gold sequins with heavy gold embroidery in between. The sari is divided into eleven panels, four full and seven partial, with a section of undecorated crepe fabric at the end. In each panel, extending in from the sides, are triangles composed of small flower-like designs - small circles with loops around the outer edge, and a four-petaled design within. Both ends are finished with a zigzag stitch in gold thread.

Hand puppet of a 'Doutor (doctor) Pindura Saia' character. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has pink skin, almond-shaped black eyes, a large nose, a closed mouth with purple-grey lips, and adhered black and full beard. He wears gold-rimmed glasses. His fabric body / tunic is a light red and white gingham with brightly-coloured plant patterned sleeves. The fabric covered foam tubes are adhered to the hands. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Carlo Magno (King Charlemagne). Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He wears a burgundy and gold tunic, purple-red velvet leggings, and a dark blue with gold brocade cape with a gold fringe. He also wears a silver metal belt, silver ankle guards, and a silver crown with deep red velvet underneath four arches, and surmounted by a small brass(?) globe and copper(?) cross. The crown is decorated with set glass(?) stones. His chest is embellished with a shiny woven textile, adorned with applique, sequins and looped-fringe, topped with a silver-coloured necklace with bejeweled cross (part c). The left wrist has a length of black cord tied to it, and the right hand is clenched in a fist, with a hole for an accessory to be inserted through. A metal rod with an eye hook at each end is tied to the right wrist. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Caboclo de lança' (warrior with spear) character. Carved from wood and painted. He has light pink skin, small nose, small moustache and an open mouth with thin red lips. He holds a small white flower in his mouth. He wears a shiny gold outfit with a sequined and beaded poncho overtop. The front design features a blue upper half with a red, green and gold rainbow over a gold dot at centre, and a white lower half with a red cross at centre. Each sequin has a clear bead sewn at centre. The poncho is lined with tassels, alternating between red and gold-yellow. On his head, he wears a red headdress with shiny plastic garland in blue, gold and red and a light blue chin strap. Under the back of poncho, he wears a board covered in orange fabric, with two metal bells attached to each lower corner. He holds a long flag in his left hand consisting of various brightly coloured ribbons wrapped around the staff down the entire length. His boots are painted black.

Calungo hand puppet of a 'Capitão João Redondo' or Captain John character. Head and hands are carved from wood. He has yellow-beige natural wood for skin, and painted oval black eyes, black hair and moustache, and red lips. He has a moveable lower jaw, hinged with leather both within the head and small straps on either side, and fishing line extending out from the chin down the front of his collar. His fabric body / tunic is black and white gingham. The fabric is nailed to the hands and head. Each hand has a single hole extending through the hand for possible accessories. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Bradamante, who is a female knight. Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) that is mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. She wears a pink tunic, off-white brocade pantaloons, and a pink velvet cape with a silver fringe. She wears full armour with separate arm, wrist, shin guards, and a detachable neck (part c) guard. The helmet has a visor and is decorated with light pink feathers. The left wrist has a length of black-brown cord tied to it, which attaches a small circular gold shield to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts d-f) is inserted through. The threaded end of the blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – held together by fabric underneath her outfit.

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Ferraù. Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long metal rod with a hook at the top. The face is painted with a black moustache and goatee, and grey wrinkles. He wears vertically striped green pantaloons and a tunic, red with gold applique leggings and shoulder bands, and a cape in black with grey brocade. He wears body armour including wrist and ankle guards, a neck guard (part c) and a helmet. The helmet is wrapped with braided yarn (yellow, pink and light purple-blue), tied at the back. The left wrist has a length of black-brown cord tied to it, which also attaches a small circular gold shield, with a six-point flower design, to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small metal sword (parts d-f) is inserted through. The threaded end of the blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel.
