Buffalo Headdress3420/47

Wooden bovine headdress (or helmet mask). Carved from wood and covered with cloth and glass beads. The entire mask is decorated with bright blue beads, with eyes of red and white beads, nostrils and lips in red. The muzzle tapers somewhat between the head and nose, with the mouth open, exposing large block teeth and a tongue. There are small rounded ears, and two long horns that extend toward the back. There are short lengths of cord knotted at the back.

Amulet3420/68

Rectangular metal amulet with concave or "pinched" sides. The amulet contains layers of rectangles, diamonds, and triangles in silver with gold a gold diamond at centre. A raised silver sphere is set at centre. The front is etched with geometric designs and script. Strung on a long black fibre cord, which attaches at both upper corners of the amulet, with the ends hanging as tassels hang on either side of the amulet. Each tassel is wrapped with a brown and a green band. On the back, marked with five small vertical lines, one above two rows of two, with a horizontal line between the two rows of two, and an etched square with diagonal lines within.

A raised silver sphere is set within the diamond at centre. The front is etched with geometric designs and script. Strung on a long black fibre cord, which attaches at both upper corners of the amulet. The tassels are wrapped with thin bands of light brown, dark brown, and teal.

A single black oval stone is set at centre. The front is etched with geometric designs and script. Strung on a long black cord, which attaches at both upper corners of the amulet. Two large brown leather tassels hang from the cord on either side of the pendant, and are each decorated with light teal bands and checkerboard or zigzag patterns in black and white at the top.

Mask3420/22

Carved and painted mask. The rectangular face section has two sunken rectangular areas on either side of the nose ridge, two rectangular cutout eye holes, and small pointed ears. The forehead is decorated with X's, creating a repeating diamond and triangle design that continues down each side of the face. The designs are painted dark red and black. The superstructure is a female figure with projecting breasts, square shoulders, arms bent at the elbow and held out to the sides. Her left forearm is shaped like a large ladle. She is wearing a red fibre skirt. She has red crest-like hair, and an earring in her left ear.

Halibut Hook3460/1

Large “V”-shaped halibut hook made of two pieces of wood. Arms are tied together with fibre cording at the angled end. Longer piece is thin and straight, thicker piece has a triangular head and an iron barb tied to its other end. Barb faces inwards and is at an acute angle. Wooden wedge tied to thicker arm with fishing twine. Twine is long, fraying and white-grey. The thin arm of the hook is carved into an otter-like figure, with a hole through its middle. A thick and braided piece of fibre cording, with a knotted loop end, is strung through the hole.

Loom3447/1 a-e

Loom with a partially completed weaving tied to four bars (part a). Weaving attached to bars at the top and bottom with one bar, intertwined in the weaving, towards the bottom, and another attached to the back, towards the bottom. There are three removable swords (parts b-d) and one removable shuttle (part e) stored in the weaving, at the bottom. The attached bars are all made of bamboo. The shuttle (part e) and one of the swords (part c) are made of light yellow-brown wood, the other two swords (parts b and d) are dark brown. The shuttle has notched ends and is wrapped entirely in orange thread. The weaving on part a is orange and has rows of repeated designs across the entire surface. Row designs include: loose chevron pattern, tight chevron pattern, dotted squares, dotted lines, "X" design across length with squares in the negative space, and abstract "V" design across length with squares in the negative space. Designs done in indigo, red, yellow, black, green, dark blue, white and electric blue. Rest of weaving is incomplete and orange in colour, with loose strands of black and yellow throughout. Three metal rings attached to the top and bottom loom bars- one on the top, to the right of the weaving, and two on the bottom, on either side of the weaving.

Container3443/1 a-b

Sterling silver container (part a) with lid (part b). The container has an oblong body with decorations of a tree with blossoms on one side, and a branch with blossoms on the other. The lid fits over the shoulder, and tapers in to a top that rotates, which opens and closes the holes on top. Mark on base: ARTHUR & BOND. YOKOHAMA. STERLING.
