Bodice3425/4 a-b

Woven bodice (part a) with embroidered band across top. At centre, there is a white diamond, with the diamond shape radiating out from the centre in black and white sideways V's. Two black fabric shoulder straps are sewn on one end, and pinned in place by safety pins on the back. The upper section of the bodice fastens at the back with metal hook and clasps, leaving the bottom fabric open and drapey. The headband (part b) matches the embroidery on the bodice. It is composed of two pieces of fabric with bilaterally symmetrical designs, stitched together on one end, and attached by three small pieces of black elastic strap on the other. The interior is lined with black fabric. A typed label with the name "Deirdre Parkes" is stitched to the lining of the front, centre.

Offering3396/21

Joss paper hat-style offering. The folded red paper offering is open along the bottom edge, then folded and adhered shut on the top edge. There is a light pink with green imitation foil floral decoration, partially outlined with an orange ribbon at bottom centre. At top centre there is a copper-coloured imitation foil three-point decoration.

Jacket3464/1

Handmade, indigo dyed jacket. The exterior is black, the interior is lined with dark blue cloth. Jacket has a front centre opening, with finely woven bands attached to either side. Bands have a central design of curved lines on a solid background, trimmed by plain and dotted lines. Designs are done in different shades of purple. Identically coloured bands are along the halfway point of the sleeves. Bands have alternating, diagonal rows of swastikas and meander-like designs. They are framed with straight lines and rhombuses. Sides of bands, closest to the cuffs, are trimmed with white and dark brown stitches. Identical stitching along shoulders. Back of jacket has a central panel of vertical stripes, done in shades of blue and brown. Overtop, below the neckline, is an additional decorative panel made of tin embroidery, done in meander-like designs. Panel has long strands of fringe along the bottom edge. Front of jacket has a patch on one side, and another piece is inset around the neck.

String Puppet3352/7

Mamulengo string puppet (marionette) of a man riding a 'burrinha' or ox characters. Heads, hands and feet are carved from wood and painted. The man has orange-pink skin, painted black hair, straight mouth with red lips, and large oval black eyes. He wears a long-sleeved yellow with blue floral shirt, and yellow with multicoloured heart pattern pants. The black and white ox has long black leather ears, and a curly black tail. A red with multicoloured floral pattern skirt extends down where the animal's body should be. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny red ribbon at the wrists and neck, and across the ox's nose. The man is attached by several black strings to a wooden control bar composed of a single long piece of wood with one cross-bar.

Tree of Life Sculpture3452/2

Miniature 'tree of life' sculpture made from clay in the shape of a tree with a thick trunk. The design appears to depict Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Covered with various large flowers in light yellow, red and black, small round fruit, and large dark green leaves extending out around the exterior, all attached to thin wires that are sunk into the tree. Amongst the foliage are two small naked figures with their genitals covered by fig leaves, a female and a male, with a large grey serpent wrapped around the trunk in between. Above, a winged figure in a pink and red tunic, and two light yellow birds on either side. There is one large candle holder extending straight up from the trunk of the tree with its rim painted red.

Tree of Life Sculpture3452/1

Miniature 'tree of life' sculpture made from clay in the shape of a densely branched tree with a thick trunk. Densely covered with red, blue and dark blue clay flowers and green leaves attached to thin wires that are sunk into the tree. Amongst the foliage are placed a myriad of decorations, including trompo spinning tops, butterflies, birds, sunflowers, a sun, a blue and white lidded jar, and a mermaid with a pink tail holding a stringed instrument at centre. Behind the mermaid is a purple arch with flowers across it, and extending out from it. There are four candle holders - two on each side, one pink and one blue.

Hand Puppet3352/1 a-c

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Boizinho' or bull character. The body is carved from wood and painted. The bull (part a) is black with white spots with two long brown horns that extend forwards. Where the legs should be, it's covered by a long multi-coloured fabric skirt. The skirt is composed of four strips of fabric, each with a different pattern - the top section is yellow with large pink flowers, then shiny gold, then red with blue flowers, and then purple shiny fabric. There are neon ribbons hanging from the horns, as well as a single strip around the top of the skirt. A long black tail of a triangle of black fabric and black hair extends down the back. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements. The puppet can be placed on a stand - stick (part b) and base (part c).
