Sago Peg3134/3

Sago peg with carved, painted head. Peg is split from its tapered bottom to the thicker midpoint, where it is wrapped with a wide band of woven rattan. Its top is painted a dark brown with areas of lacquering, and carved into the heads of a human and a bird. Two faces each span two facets of the diamond-shaped human head, featuring engraved eyes and protruding lips in an undercut chin. Above is the bird’s head, sitting atop a long curved neck with parted beak dropping toward the forehead of one of the human faces.

Sago Peg3134/2

Its top is painted a dark brown with areas of lacquering, and carved into the heads of a human and a bird. Above is the bird’s head, sitting atop a long curved neck with parted beak dropping toward the forehead of one of the human faces. Small wings are blunt and partially unfurled.

The bamboo is finished in lacquer. The pieces of the instrument are joined together with a woven rope of unbleached cotton looped through two holes bored through each piece of bamboo and the holes at the centre of the washers. The rope is knotted on one side of the instrument.

Set of bamboo clappers (part a) and accompanying cloth bag (part b). Instrument consists of five rectangular pieces of curved bamboo seperated by metal coins. The bamboo is finished in lacquer. These are joined together with a thick, braided red cotton rope looped through two holes bored through each clapper and the square holes at the centre of each coin. The rope is decoratively knotted on one side, with tassels falling from the knot. The cotton carrying bag is blue with a white pattern of foliage and dots. It closes with a pull tie at top.

Mask3123/22

Carved wooden mask. Face is long and narrow, with a dark, pointed beard and tall hairstyle topped by a bun. Inner portion of the face is a light tan colour, with bulging eyes, a small, narrow nose, and protruding diamond shaped mouth. Two rows of small squares decorate the cheeks. The forehead and edges of the face are painted red, with a diamond shape carved on forehead at centre, and two small round ears protruding from sides. The back rim of the mask is large, unpainted, and carries two bored holes on each side and at top. It has been lacquered on the interior.

Violin3126/2 a-b

Violin (part a) and bow (part b). Violin has a scroll, four pegs, and an unmarked fingerboard with two strings remaining and attached to the tailpiece, one metal and one catgut. Tailpeice is fixed to the instrument by wire wrapped around a wood peg on the bottom of the body, and no bridge remains. Chinrest is small and made of painted but unvarnished wood, attached by two metal pins that wrap around to the back of the body. Violin is coloured rich red-brown and yellow-brown with a high-shine lacquer. Bow stick and tip are made of a single piece of dark brown wood, with a two-tone metal endscrew. Bow frog is made of ebony with a small inset circle of abalone shell on either side for decoration. (No bow hair remains attached.)

Model Canoe3051/15

Painted model canoe. The body of the canoe is wide in the centre line, narrowing toward both the bow and stern, where it rises high above the deck. The keep is pronounced, the bottom of the boat very slightly rounded. The outer hull is painted with black formline images from gunwales to keel, while the interior and base are undecorated. Lacquer covers the exterior.
