Tube Skirt Belt3587/51 a-c

Three separate belt styles - red hoop belts (seven hoops currently tied together; part a), black multistrand string belt (part b), and a fabric belt with a metal coil around it (part c).There are seven hoop belts of bent bamboo grass(?) or rattan(?) that have been lacquered red which have been tied together with red and green string. The multistrand belt is made of coiled loops of twisted black fibre which has been tied together with red and green string. The fabric belt is a strip of cloth with metal coiled around the midsection. One end of the fabric has several knots along it, possibly incorporating more cloth.

Model Totem Pole3650/1

Small wooden carving in the style of a model totem pole. Base is rectangular with the front corners rounded off; above the base is a carved animal head that appears to be a mountain sheep ewe, with straight horns pointing up; then a plain pole section; at the top is another carved animal head, a mountain sheep with curved horns. Both animals have round incised eyes. The back is flat and plain. The base has an ink inscription: "WHiTEHORSE Y.T. July 1962"

Decorated Gourd3592/14

Shiny black bulbous gourd container. The gourd is hourglass shaped, with the upper portion smaller than the lower portion. The top is painted with a large red and black flower, with gold centre, from which small gold dots extend out and small orange and yellow leaves. Are the body, groupings of bright flowers outlined in gold with the same small orange and yellow leaves.

Puppet3471/1 a-c

Male Bunraku theatre puppet (part a) wearing a long heavy robe. He has a removable head (part b) and separate sword (part c). The body has an internal wooden, bamboo and paper frame, with cords and rods throughout to control arm and hand movement. There are stuffed cloth bundles around the arms, legs and stomach for added dimension. The character is wearing a long-sleeved, front-closing under-robe, coloured dark orange with elaborate white embroidery across its entire surface. Motifs consist of circular dragons with curvilinear and floral lines in between. Overtop, the puppet is wearing a short-sleeved, vest-like robe. The shoulders and lower half are pleated. Coloured dark purple with a dark grey meander pattern background. Throughout there are embroidered circular dragons divided by rows of flowers; designs in white, dark orange and dark green. Matching belt tied around waist. White wooden hands extend past the sleeves. The head (part b) consists of a beige square-like face, long beige neck and styled black hair. He has a wide nose, large light grey eyes, and wide slanted eyebrows. A pointed diagonal red line is painted across both eyes, lips are done in a matching red. He has a light blue beard and moustache. Hair is pulled into a top knot, with a paper bow secured behind. Head is attached to a wooden rod with a handgrip. Multiple cords, with toggles, run through the grip and into the head, to control eye, eyebrow, mouth and neck movement. Maker's mark stamped onto base of head and along back of handgrip. The short curved sword (part c) is sheathed. It has a black hilt with a bronze-coloured metal pommel and guard. The sheath is black with a bronze-coloured metal cap. The sheath’s grip is dark brown and has light brown flowers painted across it. Brown, grey and white striped cord tied around the blade, to attach it to the puppet’s belt.

Shadow Puppet3338/9 a-c

Sun Wukong (Monkey King) shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and gold staff(?) (part c). Depicted with a human-like body, and monkey head. He wears a long yellow tunic with red tie ending in green tassels around his waist, and red pants. On his feet he wears tiger(?) shoes. His head is yellow with five black spots, except for a mask-like area around his eyes and nose. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The staff is yellow, with a thin red outline, and is operated by one rod.

Shadow Puppet3338/12

White Dragon Horse shadow puppet. White horse with intricate cutout pattern indicative of Luanzhou style. The horse has a large red saddle with green border, and a red and yellow blanket underneath. Behind the saddle is a flower decoration and small red with blue tassels. The bridle is red with green tassels, and a black sash extends around the horse's shoulders. The mane and tail are black. Both eyes are visible. Limbs jointed with fibre at the legs and tail. Operated by one rod.

Shadow Puppet3338/13 a-c

Li Tieguai shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and crutch (part c). He has long curly black hair, a curly scraggy beard and a dirty face. He wears a black robe with small red or green cloud decorations, tied at the waist with a red sash, and with red pants showing under the bottom of the robe. On his hip is a yellow gourd(?). He has bare feet. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. He has a black crutch accessory. There is a small loop at the end of the shaft for the puppet's fingers.

Shadow Puppet3338/8 a-c

Ju Bajie (Pigsy) shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and accessory rake (part c). Pigsy is depicted with a human body, and pig head. His head is more translucent and shiny than the body. He has a pig snout and large pig ears, large almond-shaped eyes and black eyebrows. He wears a black hat with a green band that is tied with red string, knotted under his chin. He wears an open black tunic with green edging. His hip, knee and elbow joints have wheel-like designs. On his feet he wears black shoes tied with red string. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The rake is black with a curved neck, row of triangular teeth, and is operated by one rod.

Shadow Puppet3338/1 a-b

Shadow puppet of a female warrior (wudan) (Mu Guiying), made from semi-translucent cut, punched and painted cow hide. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. The puppet (part a) has a large detachable head (part b). Her face is cutout, and outlined in black with small angled red lips. She wears a large headdress with green, red or pink pompoms, and large red tassels hanging from the front. Two large light brown extensions made to look like pheasant feathers come out of the top of the headdress and trail behind her. She has a bow and quiver full of arrows on her side. She wears four large green with red, yellow, orange and blue flags(?). Her body armour is very detailed with lots of punched-out patterns, vertical bands of alternating red and green padding, and a yellow fringe across her chest and arms. Operated by three bamboo and steel rods.

Shadow Puppet3338/17 a-c

He Xiangu shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and lotus flower (part c). She is depicted with a cutout face, and long black hair that is partially tied up on her head, and then the rest extends down. Her hair is tied with red ribbon and decorated with flowers. She wears a pink robe with various coloured cloud(?) decorations. Her pants are light green, exposing only the tip of her red shoes with pink pompoms on the toes. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The lotus flower is white and pink, and the stem and leaf are bright green. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.
