Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with lacquered paper with a design of three swirls converging at the centre, coloured red, green, and yellow. It has a narrow edging of black paper around the outside edge. The fan is inserted into a split in the handle, which is flat and shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets. The shape of the handle is repeated with an outline of orange paint on the fan.

Part a is a carved wooden Bodhisattva figure painted gold which appears to have been glued onto a stand from a large shrine (N2.987 h) and no longer fits in its original box-like shrine. Part b is the small box-like shrine with doors on metal hinges that open outward to reveal gold-walled interior with a wooden platform at the bottom, only partially decorated at the front. At the top is a carved facade painted with a curvilinear flower pattern with one red, white and light blue flower. The outside of the box is painted brown in a wood-like pattern with red calligraphy running vertically on both doors. The right door has carved metalwork all along its edge and a carved metal handle. The edges of the box are rounded.

Lid (b) has brown top with circular lip at centre top and gold floral design around lip, orange-red inside with off-centre gold flower design. Base (a) has orange-red inside that fades to brown near rim, brown outside with black base.

Collapsible fan consisting of folded silver paper that has four columns of Japanese characters painted in black, and which is supported by three black lacquered bamboo ribs and two outer, wide lacquered ribs. The reverse side of the paper is gold.

Carving made from the root and trunk of a birch tree. A bust of a person with headdress has been attached to the base with a metal peg. The eyes of the figure have been filled in with a white paint and a single black bead. The base has heads of two animals sticking out from the burl. Carving stands on three leg-like protrusions. Two circular and one oblong hole have been carved deeply into the top of the base.
