Sake container. Cylindrical and slightly tapered from top to bottom, with a metal handle on the side. The container's staves are held together with twisted bands of bamboo, two at the top and three at the bottom, and lid has a plugged opening. A stopper (part b), also a tapered cylinder, fits into a hole in the top of the container near the edge. The top of the container is red lacquer with a black lacquer edge, and the sides as well as the bamboo are stained reddish-brown and coated in varnish.
Chest (a) consisting of a square base with feet that has bevelled gold edges at the top; contains a taller drawer at the bottom (b) as well as a shallower drawer at the top (c). A mirror stand (d) with an arched top, curled finials, two curved arms that angle forward (to hold mirror Ed5.2891), and two circular metal inserts depicting birds fits into two square holes in the top of the base. A gold stylized floral and vine design covers the black lacquered chest and stand. The top and sides of the chest each have three leaf medallions with calligraphy in the centre. The drawers have metal ring pulls, each with a leaf design, and are black lacquer with gold trim on the top edges.
Buddha, in the position of "calling the earth to witness" (bhumisparsha mudra). Made of lath covered with plaster and fabric, on a wooden base. Finished in gold leaf and lacquer. The hair has textured blue conical shapes and has a top bun. The eyes are looking downward with multiple thin curving lines for the eyebrows above. The face has a closed red mouth and long ear lobes. The body is draped in clothing. The figure sits with crossed legs, left ankle under right ankle, the right hand rests on the right knee and the left hand rests in front, on the right leg, over the left ankle.
Decorated wooden club. The club is a light golden brown covered with a clear shiny lacquer. The club has six carved bands leading down to the handle. Starting from the top, the first band shows two creatures with wings and open mouthes. The second band shows a large face over a seal and then a large shark. The third band shows a bird holding a shark in its talons and then another creature. The fourth band shows men in a canoe spearing a giant shark and a bird flying near the shark's tail. The fifth band shows a bird sitting on a snake. The sixth band shows a man wearing a feathered headdress and a horse with a bridle. The handle of the club has an oval hand guard at the bottom and top of the grip. The grip is decorated with four bands of various designs with lines and dots. On the bottom of the handle 'EB' is carved.
Ink (a) in the form of a male figure standing on a lobster (?), carrying a sword and dressed in an elaborate robe painted gold with green and blue details in the form of irises and characters representing happiness. The figure fits into a specially made rectangular wooden box composed of five walls (b) with a sliding front panel composed of a wooden frame (c) that holds a sheet of glass (d). The box is fitted with cardboard cut and bent to fit snugly around the ink figure and a base (e) that fits inside the box, all of which is covered in fibre with woven multicoloured floral patterns except for the back, which is red fabric.
Pair of parallelogram-shaped wooden plaques carved in high relief depicting two different outdoor scenes of an emperor and his guard. Colours are predominantly gold, green, red. Each plaque has a pierced brass handle attached on the back at the top for hanging; hanging handles feature ornate linear patterning.
Divided tray, or box. Square as viewed from above, with sides that angle outwards towards the top edge and upright walls that divide the box into four sections. Both upright walls have curved edges, but one is much more pronounced and higher than the other. Distributive design in black and red, overall. The top edges are painted black and the outside edges of the base are painted red.
Rattle composed of two complementary parts in the form of raven: a raven figure comprises the main part of the rattle with a bird's face that has a recurved beak carved on the raven's stomach. A reclining figure on the raven's back is connected to a frog sitting on its chest by a protruding tongue, and a stylized bird's head is connected to the frog's back via its beak. The rattle is painted with red, black and green. Inscription: 'Village Island' pencilled on Raven's left wing.
Set of two ink slabs, both with slightly raised edges, intaglio Chinese characters in gold on one face, and slightly raised Chinese characters on the reverse. One (part a) has a locomotive engine design on the same face as the gold characters.
Screen with black lacquered wooden frame and two arched feet. At the centre of the screen is a circular panel with embroidered cherry blossoms in grey, white and black on beige ground over which are three evenly spaced vertical screens with black laquered wood grid frames with a grey silk screen behind each. The central panel is framed by a gold leather textured paper with a band of floral patterned silk in shades of pink and grey on light pink. The reverse is finished with a panel of the same floral silk with a separate border of this silk joined at the seam with off-white woven ribbon.
