Ornament3171/4

Woman's dress ornament. A single piece of dark purple cord is heavily knotted into three descending ‘t’ shaped patterns. Below, the cord is tied in such a way as to allow it to fall into eighteen long loops that are wrapped at top and bottom with gold metallic wire. The ends of the cord hang between these loops. A round, textured metal broach is attached above the ornament’s midpoint. At its centre sits a jade rose holding two small metal leaves. At the back of the brooch is a stick pin.

Figure3065/13

Figure is carved from a piece of jade coloured in mottled orange, grey and light brown. The shape is a long rectangle, slightly rounded on bottom, slightly pointed at top, with bevelled edges. Lines are carved into the piece to mimic the body of a cicada: on one side, a set is engraved horizontally at top and V-shapes at bottom. On opposite is a central line running vertically and splitting at top, with horizontal grooves at bottom. A hole is carved in the base to allow object to be threaded on a string.
