Woven basket with designs. Basket is rectangular, long and thin, flaring slightly from bottom to rim, where remnants of flexible twisted cedar handles can be seen on one side, with a handle attached to the other side. The basket has a wide box weave in cedar bark on the base, and tightly wrapped grass on the body. Decoration consists of two encircling rows of red swastika designs along the top and bottom. One side has a scene of birds landing on a branch with foliage and red flowers. The opposite side shows a triangular pennant flag in purple with CANADA in orange. Purple flowers with green foliage sit at opposite corners of the image. (Note: basket has undergone repairs since the photo was taken.)
Cat-tail reed mat. Mat is made of a double layer of reeds laying parallel to each other, joined in a braid of reed and wool string at the top. Long twisted cords join the reeds together across the width of the mat, spaced at regular intervals. A thick woven plait falls down one side. Ends are contained by a wool string entwined around each strand near bottom.
Metal double-barbed point (part a) with rough metal shaft (part b), fitted and sinew-wrapped in socket of shaped wooden section. This is inserted into a reed section, sinew-wrapped and glued with pitch. Intermittent wrappings of sinew continue down length of shaft. The end of the reed is notched.
Metal double-barbed point (part a) with a bark-covered fore-shaft, fitted into a sinew-wrapped reed (part b). The arrow is a series of reed and wood fitted together and glued with black pitch. The reed sections have further pitch-blackened sinew wrapping at the centre, end, and near the bark fore-shaft.
Paper fan advertising a Vietnamese water puppet troupe. Collapsible fan is made of tan coloured paper attached to thin bamboo sticks that are gathered at bottom and held together with a metal rivet. On one side is printed NŪA ROI NÓ’UOC THĂNG LONG at top, with the logo of the "Thang Long Water Puppet Troupe” below, this lettering arching over the stylized image of a crowned red puppet standing in water. On the other side of the fan is written QŪY VĂN HÓA THÀNH PHÔ’ H`A NộI . HA NOI CULTURAL FUND above a blue logo of two hands holding a small building. Location information is printed on both sides in blue.
Long double headed spear. Shaft (part a) is made from a light grass material, maintaining diameter until its proximal end, where it narrows to join with the spear neck. Strands of fibre are wound tightly many times around the connection, as well as at the shaft’s distal end. The spear neck (together with heads constitute part b) is made up of two long pieces of dark brown wood, lashed together near their base, then separating. An iron head tops each shaft. Heads are thin, rusted, and have a single large barb pointing down and to the outside.
