Stringed Musical InstrumentAf500 a-b

Gourd harp-like instrument. Forked piece of branch (part b), with a straight section of equal length to that of the forks, and with a stick going across the top creating a triangular frame. One side has nine holes pierced through by burning. Five grass strings are tied into five of them and go to the opposite side and wind around the stick. Piece of cord around unpierced end. Separated from frame is half of a brown-yellow gourd (part a), of which the top centre has four pierced holes on it with cracks around them, and grass going through two holes at the base of the gourd.

Globular calabash rattle with neck extending slightly off centre. Decorated by incising painted surface to expose linear geometric design in natural yellow. Stopper is fitted to top by loop of five strands of purple thread strung through holes in neck. Paint is red.

Elongated gourd rattle with stopper and leather fringe. Neck and pointed base of gourd are stained black. Elaborate decoration of mid-section consists of three panels each repeating the same linear and curvilinear patterns separated by crosshatched forms and bordered top and bottom by two parallel lines enclosing interlocking forms. Black decoration is burnt and stained. Light yellow of gourd is exposed where incised, skin is light brown. Stopper is red, and fringe is black striped.

Hollow globular calabash rattle with neck leading to a smaller globular shape open at one end. Sides of large globe are covered by a netting, incorporating dark brown seed beads which fit around neck at one end leaving the other end, the bottom of the globe, uncovered. A carrying string is attached to base of netting. Calabash skin is yellow and worn in spots to show natural calabash fibre underneath.

Incised with lines and a thin line of brown painted inside pattern following the design. Curves up at side (bottom of gourd). Very light weight.
