Mask3321/8

Female face mask. The face is carved of wood, and painted with sections of triangle designs or slanted lines. Black and white beading extends from the brow line down the ridge of the nose to the chin, with a single cowrie shell between the eyebrows. The lips are outlined in a string of beads in sections of blue and black. Attached to the mask is woven fibre, decorated with strings of cowrie shells and knotted plant fibre. A small raised form, wrapped in woven material, sits on the top of the head, with strings of various coloured beads hanging down from the form, and a cowrie shell at each end.

Rectangular cover in a light brownish-pink silk, embroidered with heart, vine-like and triangular designs. Three concentric rectangles with circle at centre in brass metal thread. Small mirror decorations. Edged with fringe in alternating sections of green, orange, red, dark blue or purple with beaded ends. Each corner has a roundel with flower design of cowrie shells with metal centre, and tassels extending out in silk and metal threads.

Long-sleeved dress with v-neck. Majority of dress is a green silk, with two blue rectangular patches on front. Hem, cuffs and front heavily embroidered in mainly orange, pink and red with many other colours. Large pentagon-shaped pocket on front with one opening on the right. Small mirror decorations on chest, hem and centre of front. Bright green silk patches on back of shoulders. Large pink section on lower back.

Small child's vest. Heavily embroidered and beaded on both sides. Looped beading along the bottom edge, with design repeated across the chest. Two horizontal open pockets, one on each side. Opaque white buttons all over (flat and rounded shank buttons and sew through buttons) , with one small button and loop closure near top of opening. Small circular metal decoration on right edge of vest's opening. Dark blue fabric lining.

Dress Fragment3332/18 a-b

Two dark purple triangular pieces from a dress (parts a-b). Heavily embroidered in cotton thread and metal thread on the front. Following the triangle-shape, a single row of small oblong mirrors are bordered with red, blue, burgundy or green embroidery. Small triangles of light blue and white beads separate the embroidered designs and the long edge is lined with a row of sections of light blue and then white beading. Each fragment backed with red and thin black striped fabric.

Hat3332/21

Small hat with cylindrical sides and four-sided pyramid top. Sides are needlepoint(?) embroidery with three rows of small white beads around the sides at the bottom, and two spaced in the middle. One 0.50 pisa bottom edge front. A strip of burgundy and gold-coloured metallic thread extends down the back of the hat. Each side of top is decorated with a blue glass button with 0.25 pisa coin. The point is topped with a large blue plastic bead with small multicoloured beads on top. Rim of hat edged with half of a metal zipper, with teeth extending out.

Small fabric pouch composed of one piece of fabric folded on itself, then sewn on the bottom and a side, leaving an opening at the top. Central design is a large diamond, flanked by concentric triangles to create a square-shape. Within, heavily embroidered geometrical and floral designs and five small inset circular glass. Five off-white shell buttons along open edge. A single row of shells with knotted thread in orange, burgundy, and light blue-green between the shells across the bag on both sides. Four tassels with light blue beads, one red, green, taupe, and eggplant, one on each bottom corner, and one at end of each shell row. Each tassel wrapped with metallic thread. Small circular mirrors inset into dark purple circular embroidery around bottom and side edges.
