String Puppet3351/1 a-c

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Carlo Magno (King Charlemagne). Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He wears a burgundy and gold tunic, purple-red velvet leggings, and a dark blue with gold brocade cape with a gold fringe. He also wears a silver metal belt, silver ankle guards, and a silver crown with deep red velvet underneath four arches, and surmounted by a small brass(?) globe and copper(?) cross. The crown is decorated with set glass(?) stones. His chest is embellished with a shiny woven textile, adorned with applique, sequins and looped-fringe, topped with a silver-coloured necklace with bejeweled cross (part c). The left wrist has a length of black cord tied to it, and the right hand is clenched in a fist, with a hole for an accessory to be inserted through. A metal rod with an eye hook at each end is tied to the right wrist. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

Hand Puppet3352/16

Calungo hand puppet of a 'Casimiro Coco' character. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has black skin, glass eyes with sparkles, orange wool hair and beard, red lips and eyebrows, metal teeth and prominent white eyelashes. His jaw is hinged, and is operated by a control wire under his chin. He wears a basketry hat, with the rim wrapped with light blue ribbon. His fabric body / tunic is sky blue with large pink flowers and green leaves, with a cutout floral pattern within. The fabric is adhered to the hands and head. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Mask3420/54

Mask with trunk-like projection extending forwards from top of the head. Mask built on a wood frame, lined with woven plant fibre. Heavily decorated with cowries and areas of beadwork on forehead and around side. Face has cowrie shell eyes outlined with beads, and a wooden nose and mouth. Bottom edged with plant fibre, which has been split into finer pieces below the face.

Wand3420/49

Wand with heavily beaded handle. Three sections of bands of colours - dark brown, yellow, orange and light blue, with three sections of triangles in white, dark green, yellow and orange. There is a section where the shaft splits into four smaller pieces that are wrapped in light blue and black beads. Above the beading, the handle is wrapped in red fabric with two small loops of plant fibre cord attached. Extending from the other end is long, straight dark red-brown horse(?) hair over wood, that folds over on itself where the wood ends.

Picture Frame3421/7

Carved and painted picture frame holding a coloured photo of the Goose Bay Cannery, behind glass. Each side of the frame has a pole with (top to bottom): seated eagle with wings folded in, downward-facing whale, and an Indigenous man depicted with long braids. Along the top is an eagle with its wings spread, and along the bottom is a sisiutl (double-headed serpent) with a central face of a supernatural being.

Buffalo Headdress3420/47

Wooden bovine headdress (or helmet mask). Carved from wood and covered with cloth and glass beads. The entire mask is decorated with bright blue beads, with eyes of red and white beads, nostrils and lips in red. The muzzle tapers somewhat between the head and nose, with the mouth open, exposing large block teeth and a tongue. There are small rounded ears, and two long horns that extend toward the back. There are short lengths of cord knotted at the back.

Tunic3420/48

Tunic covered in beadwork. Short-sleeved, box-shaped, high neck with round neckline, and an open back with two ties at top and bottom. Neckline, sleeve cuffs, and hem edged in red. Beadwork is light blue, white and yellow in overall open net-like diamond pattern, with elongated, vertical, diamond patterns at both sides, repeated in small on the sleeves.

Hunter's tunic (part a) with matching hat (part b). Tunic made of bright blue cloth. Rectangular black leather patches are attached all over, with long, thin strips of brown leather knotted to both sides, creating fringes. A few pieces are dyed red or green. White cowrie shells outline the neck, and are sewn in lines on the tunic. There is a five-sided pocket on the front, centre - with the three stitched edges lined in cowrie shells. The bottom edge is unfinished, and somewhat fringed from unravelling fabric. Small horns and small mirrors inset in leather are attached over the tunic. The woven hat has a circular mirror inset in leather between two curved horns at front, centre. A single row of cowrie shells lines the bottom edge.

At front, centre - there is a circular mirror inset in leather between two small horns. A single row of cowrie shells lines the bottom edge.
