Fan3660/31

Fan of white and some purple-blue downy feathers, and a birch bark handle with quillwork. The front has attached a small black and orange-yellow bird with its body oriented downwards, and head turned to its left. The back has 11 white feathers extending out of the handle, the tops of which have been rounded with downy feathers extending beyond them. There is quillwork on both sides of the birch bark handle. On the front, there is a seated person in profile with a pipe held to their mouth next to a small tree surrounded by a foliage frame with a flower at the top and bottom. Below, a bird in profile stands within some foliage. The quillwork on the back of the handle depicts another person in profile with a pipe(?) held to their mouth, situated between two different plants and also framed by foliage and a flower at the top and bottom. Below appears to be a red plant.

Dance Apron3656/9 a-c

Cedar bark apron (part a) and two separate ornaments (parts b-c); apron made up of two panels. Apron's waist band consists of braided cords with fringe inserted in between them at centre; all bound together with red-dyed bark. Braided cords continue into long ties on outer edges; end in bundles of tied off fringe. Panels are bound together at centre with red-dyed bark; short braided cords cross over one another in middle of apron. Ornaments are braided pieces of cedar bark with tied off fringe at base; great, black, and white feathers inserted along length.

Wig3566/1 a-g

Short wig made up of brown curly human hair (part a); an interior net of red yarn and plain cord holds the shape of the wig. Back edge of wig is decorated with a band of white feathers; front left and right corners of wig are decorated with small yellow flowers. Wig has six attachments, consisting of: a red parrot on a stick, that attaches to the top (part b); brown-black and white feathered wings, that attach at the front (part c); a spray of multi-coloured parrot feathers, that attach to the front of the wings (part d); two small white and yellow feathers, that stick out on either side of the wig (parts e-f); and a snake skin headband (part g). Large feather decorations (parts c-d) are missing attachments; small feathers are inserted into wig and held in place with their shafts. Headband has two ties on either side.

Rattle with a ball-shaped head and wooden handle. Ball is made of seed(?) beads and is decorated with alternating stripes; done in brown and dark brown. Cylindrical protrusion on top of head with an opening, showing hollow interior. A band of red feathers is tied around the midpoint of the handle; additional plant ties at base.

Hand Puppet3381/19 a-b

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Caboclo de Pena' character (part a), with a large feather headdress (part b). Carved from wood and painted. He has light orange-beige skin, wide black eyes, small nose with large nostrils, and an open mouth with thin red lips. He holds a white flower in his mouth. He wears shiny red leggings with neon pink ribbon around the cuffs, with purple and neon green feathers tucked in the ribbon. He wears a speckled brown-grey feather skirt with a poncho overtop. The poncho is heavily sequined with a dark pink background and flower design in green, blue, gold, red, pink and bronze. Each sequin has a clear bead sewn at at centre. The poncho is lined with long white tassels. He wears a headdress (part b) with woven base wrapped in shiny dark pink fabric, decorated with gold star sequins around the centre and light green ribbon around the edges. Tall feathers extending up from the band, with brightly dyed feathers around the outer edge, and tall natural feathers at centre. He holds an axe in his right hand with various coloured ribbons wrapped around the staff down the entire length. His boots are painted black.

String Puppet3351/2 a-f

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Orlando (Charlemagne’s nephew Roland). Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He has a small dark brown moustache and brown hair. He wears a shiny red tunic and matching cape, adorned with gold applique and fringe. He wears full body armour with a helmet that has a visor, adorned with an eagle on top, and a train of bright red feathers. The left wrist has a length of brown cord tied to it, which also attaches a small circular gold shield, with an eagle circled by eight small flowers, to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts c-e) is inserted through. The threaded end of blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part f) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Bradamante, who is a female knight. Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) that is mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. She wears a pink tunic, off-white brocade pantaloons, and a pink velvet cape with a silver fringe. She wears full armour with separate arm, wrist, shin guards, and a detachable neck (part c) guard. The helmet has a visor and is decorated with light pink feathers. The left wrist has a length of black-brown cord tied to it, which attaches a small circular gold shield to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts d-f) is inserted through. The threaded end of the blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – held together by fabric underneath her outfit.

Bag3383/11

Woven bilum (bag) covered with layered rows of brown feathers on one side. Extending from the tightly woven band at the top is a short handle. The bag alternates between rows of dark brown and dark reddish-brown. On one side of the bag, dark brown feathers with light grey tips, are attached by looping the feather's shaft through the bag, and securing it by bending it back through a split in the shaft.
