Container3512/36

Tortoise shell snuff container with strands of twine extending from the top edge; twine decorated with beads made of plant fibre and ostrich egg shells. An apron-like cover, made of rabbit skin, is secured around the front of the tortoise shell. It is tied in place with straps knotted through holes drilled in the back of the shell. Additional straps remain loose. Hanging from the bottom edge of the rabbit skin are rows of alternating plant fibre and ostrich egg shell beads. Back of shell is uncovered; brown-red plant fibre is adhered to the back bottom edge. Interior of shell is stuffed with plant fibre.

Tanned leather ornament resembling a round bottomed purse. Top edge is folded over with strands of ostrich egg shell beaded fringe strung through the middle, hanging onto front of ornament. Protruding white beaded band borders all sides, with black triangle designs throughout. Ornament has two wide straps, stitched on either side of the top edge, that are secured together with a loose knot.

Antelope designs are on front and back, directly underneath the drilled hole. Animal on front has its knees bent and tongue out; animal on back is standing straight. Long lines of connected diamonds run down sides, dividing the front and back of the container. Base is undecorated.

Wide borders, with arrow motifs through their centres, circle top and bottom of egg. Identical bands run down sides, connecting the borders, and dividing the front and back of the container. Antelope designs on front and back; both are depicted in profile. The antelope on the front is leaping forward; animal on back has its head bent and is standing next to a small tree. Base is undecorated.

On the front and back, extending from the border to the base, are curved horn-like designs; the horns are made up of wavy lines. In between the horns are a line of connected concentric diamonds. On the front, an antelope with spiraled horns is shown walking, with its face turned outward. On the right side, there are a four-legged animal and wildebeest(?) running. The animal is incised upside down, underneath the opening; the wildebeest is along the bottom edge. Base is undecorated.

Woman’s full-length, A-line, colourful robe or coat, with long tapered sleeves; open at centre front from neck to hemline, no closures; made of red, yellow, purple, green and blue warp-ikat textile; silk warp, cotton weft; surface glazed with egg white(?). Gathering at the sides just under the sleeves. 16 cm vertical slits at each side at the hem. Front edges and bottom hem trimmed with 2.3 cm blue, pink and off white tablet-woven braid; sleeve hems trimmed with pink, blue, black and off-white 1.5 cm tablet woven braid. Body is lined with black and off-white checked cotton textile; sleeves lined with orange and off-white cotton textile; edges of the body of the garments are faced on the inside with bias strips of multi-coloured ikat textile (silk warp, cotton weft); sleeves faced with bias strips of brightly coloured floral printed cotton textile.
