Lime spatula with an intricately carved handle. The spatula is narrow at the base of the handle and widens gradually, eventually coming together at a rounded point. The carving is topped with a head containing circular eyes and a wide, upturned mouth.
Lime spatula with intricate carvings along much of its length. Spatula has rounded edges, wide at the top, tapering slightly toward the tip. Two mirror image “C” shapes are bored through the wood at the top. Carved-out lines are filled with white lime.
Lime spatula carved of wood. Much of the surface is carved. The end of the handle is a-symmetrical, with organic shapes and motifs carved into it. Beneath this, the spatula is narrow and gradually tapers outwards, ending in a rounded point.
A lime spatula with decorative carvings along its surface. The handle is topped with a carved snake. There is a raised ridge along the centre of the spatula that runs from the snake down to more stylized carvings near the tip. The end of the spatula widens into a paddle shape.
A staff carved out of dark wood with intricate patterning carved on its topper, as well as a section that takes up one quarter of the shaft. Some of the carved lines are filled with lime.
Large wooden bowl. Long and narrow, carved from rosewood, with thick walls, and a wide base that is concave on the underside. Ebony wood is inset along the outer rim in a line of diamond and triangle shapes, below which are carved the outline of birds in a linear design. On one end of the bowl sits a large sculptural element showing a shark transforming from its human shape. The figure of a man emerges from below, with large head, flat jaw, heavy brow and shell eyes, and is backed by swirls and circular designs. On the opposite side of the bowl is an eagle, wings angled behind the head to rest on the edge of the bowl, beak in contact with the upraised tail of a fish whose head supports the bird’s belly. Abalone is used for the creatures’ eyes, and in a repeating motif along the lip of the bowl.
Tall, double-sided, three-dimensionally carved vertical panel on stand. Killer whale and crocodile themes; one side is inspired by coastal Salish themes/imagery, the other side is inspired by Sepik River (Papua New Guinea) themes and imagery. Made of yellow cedar, walnut and rosewood, with ebony inlay.
Violin (part a) and bow (part b). Violin has a scroll, four pegs, and an unmarked fingerboard with two strings remaining and attached to the tailpiece, one metal and one catgut. Tailpeice is fixed to the instrument by wire wrapped around a wood peg on the bottom of the body, and no bridge remains. Chinrest is small and made of painted but unvarnished wood, attached by two metal pins that wrap around to the back of the body. Violin is coloured rich red-brown and yellow-brown with a high-shine lacquer. Bow stick and tip are made of a single piece of dark brown wood, with a two-tone metal endscrew. Bow frog is made of ebony with a small inset circle of abalone shell on either side for decoration. (No bow hair remains attached.)
Button (?) with a hemispherical shape carved from a dark brown-black wood. The ends are cut off at nearly right angles to the flat bottom surface and are pierced through with two holes. The surface is carved with seven raised ridges that run from end to end.
Wide sword-shaped brown-black wood club. 'Blade' has designs of five vertical scrolls borderd by a zig zag line at either end near the blunt end where there is a blunt protrusion. Emphasized with white chalk. 'Blade' flares outward to a flat blunt end. The 'grip' flares outward to a wavy line. Rounded 'pommel' has a carved 'frame' in a u-shape.
