Skirt3587/10

Wrap-around skirt. Top portion is a solid dark blue. Lower portion has two thick bands of embroidered design on a black background, flanked by teal bands, with a large solid dark purple band through the middle. A single row of cowrie shells are sewn along the top band with strings of beads, evenly spaced, hanging down. Each string has many different sizes of reddish-brown cylindrical beads, a few small red glass beads, and each with a pearlescent seed at the end. From the centre of the row of cowrie shells, two bells are hung. Single-side embroidery.

Wedding Basket3595/1 a-b

Wedding basket made of woven and coiled plant fibre. Dyed fibres woven together to make a zigzagging pattern. The goblet-shaped base (part a) has a red rim, four straps stitched vertically, each with three lines of cowrie shells, and four tassels with cowries hanging from each strap. The foot of the base is lined with skin with a single row of cowries stitched on, and incorporates teal and purple into the design. The lid (part b) is conical with a cylindrical upper section and a red rim.

Apron3587/42

Woman's apron with striped waistband, button and shell decorations. The waistband has striped patchwork in teal, black, red, light blue, dark blue, dark green and dark yellow as well as a section of layered patchwork creating thin lines of colour. The apron and panel each have trim in red and light blue, with the coloured stitching visible on the front. Each side has a vertical stitched line in beige and dark pink on with grouped rows of double-stitched lines in dark pink or red with yellow, white or green. Between rows of stitching, three round buttons are attached, with eighteen more groups of three buttons attached to the panel. There are three groups of three cowrie shells above a row of off-white buttons and a row of light blue buttons. There are rows of patchwork with rows of colourful zigzag stitching overtop. The bottom edge of the panel is lined with a row of cowrie shells. The bottom of both the apron and panel is embroidered with repeating u-shapes in bright colours. Collector's tag is sewn to back.

Blouse3587/17

Sleeveless blouse. Red square-shaped blouse with shoulders composed of two long, rectangular pieces of textiles folded lengthwise, then stitched on their short edges to the body, creating two armholes and a neck hole. Lower half of blouse is embellished with red beads in a cross-hatch pattern, with double beaded lines dividing the space into 8 rows. The sides are both lightly embroidered with designs in dark orange and green, with some beadwork, and three columns of four decorations made of 4 cowrie shells. Collector's tag sewn to interior.

Fertility Figure3652/1

Carved wood female fertility figure with an elaborately painted face. Figure is wearing a long grass skirt and has a heart-shaped face with protruding ears, a large nose, and open smiling mouth; the eyes are inset cowrie shells. Face is painted white with semi-circles, floral and curvilinear designs, and comma-shapes throughout, done in red; eyes and nostrils are bordered with small white triangles. Ears have two grass ties knotted through each; similar grass tie knotted through figure's nostrils. Carved with large breasts, flat buttocks and pronounced shoulder blades; genitals carved in relief and highlighted with red pigment. Her arms and legs spread straight out from her body; grass ties around wrists and ankles. Each limb has two decorative bands carved into them; bands consist of two ovals bordered by wide bands; done in brown, red, and white. Small hole drilled into back centre of head.

Face Cover3553/1 a-b

Rectangular fabric face covering, with coins and beadwork across surface (part a). Covering has a plain red centre and is bordered by alternating white cotton braids and silver beads; triangular charms stitched along top edge of red centre. Two eye holes cut out above rectangle; fabric ridge sewn down middle of covering, imitating a nose. Ridge has coins attached along the top edge, and plastic beads and buttons along the sides. Two thin, pink embroidered bands attached to sides of covering, with strands of metal beads hanging from the bottom edges; red and green tassels throughout beads. Embroidered bands have columns of orange, green, and yellow diamonds along them. Additional coin and bead decorations along bottom edge of face covering. Back is lined with floral fabric and has a leather tie on the left side (lower half- part b); two fabric loops in each corner along top edge.

Dagger3532/6

Dagger with a bone blade and packed mud face on top; bone is concave on front and convex on back. Face is made with black mud and has large rounded ears, a curved nose and open pouting mouth; mouth is outlined with red pigment(?). Eyes are inset cowrie shells; short, pointed bones stick out of nostrils with an additional curved bone protruding from left side of nose. Face is covered with small inset cowrie shells, with strokes and spots of white pigment throughout. Long cassowary feathers attached to top of head; small amount of grey fibre surrounds mouth.

Dance Skirt3522/17

Dance skirt consisting of a cloth band with strands of yarn extending from the bottom edge. Yarn is done in sections of black, yellow and orange; strands are longer in the centre than outer edges. All the strands have groupings of beads at their ends; done in red, dark blue and light blue. The cloth band is black and has flower-like designs, done in cowrie shells. Centre of band has a flower design framed by single cowrie shells; cloth ties on either end of band, for securing.

Mask3522/34

Small wooden humanoid mask with a plant fibre beard. Mask has a rounded brow with incised eyes underneath. Orange-red pigment, shaped like an oval, decorates the forehead; rest of mask is covered in brown pigment. "V"-shaped pieces of metal are embedded in each cheek; wide nose in between. Open mouth has protruding lips; four silver-coloured teeth embedded along bottom edge of top lip. Cotton headband is attached to top edge of mask; decorated with cowrie shells and a tooth. Mask has a flat back; small loop attached to top.

Container3526/1

Basketry container with lid, encased in a leather holder. Container has a circular mouth that flares into a rounded body; raised braided seam around middle. Body tapers into a small flat base, with a concave centre. The lid has an inner ridge, that fits into the container body, and a raised knob on the top centre. Bottom edge of lid has braided decorations; sides of knob are covered in cowrie shells. The holder consists of three vertical straps secured together with three horizontal straps along the bottom, centre and top of the container. Front and back strap are separate pieces; left and right side made up of one long strap that extends overtop of the container, imitating a handle. Additional leather ties are looped throughout the holder. Motifs are incised and darkened across all straps. Left, right and back straps have alternating stripes and "X" shapes; front band has wide diagonal lines throughout.
