Wedding Dress3289/22

White cotton huipil style wedding dress. Made of three panels of fabric, stitched together with sections of olive green, green and dark red zigzags. The armholes and neck hole are embroidered with sections of various colours. The chest has a large rectangular embroidered design of diamonds and stripes, a cross which extends up out of the design, and a small area of feathers. A smaller embroidered rectangle is on the back. Triangles, T-shapes, and lines are embroidered in rows along the hem with rows of chicken feathers overtop.

Mat2947/3

Large, finely-woven, tan mat. There are fringed borders along two of the mat’s sides. One fringed edge is additionally decorated with thin tan wood chips. These are sewn under a strip of red cloth, at the centre of which runs two lines of red-tipped feathers. These feathers are arranged with their brown centres towards the middle and their red tips pointing outwards creating the appearance of a set of stripes. There are two short lines of feathers running vertically up from border.

Large contemporary woven string bag (bilum) decorated with dyed stripes, different types of shells, chicken feathers, wooden beads, branches with seeds, small fan-shapes made of cut-up plastic packages, possum jaws, boar tusks and pieces of tapa cloth.

Mat566/2

The mat is rectangular and natural coloured with two fringes. The mat is woven and the weave is curved. There is a strip of red fabric sewn to one edge of the mat. Attached to the fabric are purple dyed chicken feathers. A long fringe extends past the fabric and feathers. On the opposite edge there is a shorter, squarer fringe.
