Burden BasketA9011

Rectangular flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Parallel slat base and wall construction. Upper basket is fully imbricated in grass, with two parallel stepped zig-zag designs in dark cherry bark. Dark cherry bark stitches at intervals around rim. Lower portion of basket has three short bands on all sides except one that has two, in grass and dark cherry bark, in "cluster of flies" checkerboard pattern. Rawhide loops on one side. String handles on other sides.

The basket is composed of simple coiled cedar root weaving (bifurcated stitches) with a watch spring base construction. Fully imbricated with a horizontal zigzag design in black, yellow-brown, red, and black on a yellow-brown bulrush ground.

Basketry TrayA17095

Coiled cedar root tray with handles. Simple interlocking coiled work with parallel slat base with two rows of watch-spring construction at the edge. Wide slat for the side with an extra row separating into handles. Braided edge under the handle and partial imbrication. Inside of the tray is decorated with six geometric patterns, two large diamond patterns in red and black, with a smaller black diamond inside. Exterior of basket has a series of diamonds and wide beading. .

The lid has a braided edge and indented flange. Lid is decorated with double staggered rows of red and black cherry bark beading. Sides are imbricated with a dog-like animal figure followed by double row of vertical beaded zigzag bands (alternately red and black), all against beaded bullrush ground. Colour: natural.

Basket is completely beaded; sides: has each coil done in triple staggered rows of alternating bulrush, red, and black cherry bark. Lid: has each coil is beaded with alternating strips of white, black, and red, creating concentric circles. String handle attached with rawhide thongs. Colour: natural.

Swamp grass basket (part a) with a lid (part b). Base (part a) has plaited origin with plain twining over wide warp strands. Sides and lid are twisted twined work. Slightly indented flange on the basket (part a). On the bottom rim of the basket and the side of the lid, there is a ribbon of black/yellow/purple/yellow/black. Sides of the basket (part a) have a main design consisting of two turquoise and black representations of an eagle with wings extended facing left and sitting on an arrow. Lid (part b) has a similar design of birds with a black/yellow/purple/yellow/black centre dot.
